Dominique Thread!

Just wanted to post some more photos of my Dominiques! Juin is officially a hen now, and little Marzo will be 7 weeks old tomorrow. Their personalities are very similar. They don’t mind me at all, climb on everything they shouldn’t, and are super fast and difficult to catch, but they make up for it all by being snuggly and affectionate little lap chickens. I do hope they’ll be friends when Marzo gets bigger!

So cute!

As with all chickens they have different personalities. But as a whole the breed is outgoing, unafraid, people friendly, peppy, talkative chicks. Where other chick breeds are afraid of humans the Dom chicks immediately run up to a human peeping and curious to check out your fingers, toes, shoe laces, eyeglasses, etc. Other chicks need a little time to trust and warm up but Dom chicks are outgoing from the start.

Doms get more calm as adults but will defend themselves from aggressive breeds. They are talkative as adults and very interactive conversationalists with you. When handled a lot as chicks they will be lap chickens whether you have treats or not.

We got 3 chicks at the same time and they were great with each other and as juveniles instantly submitted to our old Silkie and defended her from feral cats in the yard or defended her from an aggressive bird in the flock.

I tried finding a dom rooster back in 21 to breed with my 5 hens but never found one .Because they're so hard to find I quit looking but they're my favorite hens
Oh, I hope you find a roo. Do you have any hatcheries near for example like Cackle, Ideal, or Privett Hatcheries, etc, to have a juvenile for pickup. Or order a 16-20 week old shipped to you? The Dom roos are very regal looking. The summer is a bit late in the year for ordering birds from hatcheries but maybe contact a nearby private Dom breeder in advance for next spring pickup? Maybe you can find a local breeder on the Dominique Club website:

I'll try to add 2-3 at least next yr. Too many of one breed same color makes them hard to tell apart and count lol
:lau
We tell ours apart by the different shapes of their combs, wattles, body shapes, personalities. One Dom juvenile had lighter more dominant white feathering, had uneven wattles, and never snuggled or roosted close to her other two sisters, and was the only chick that had pasty butt for a couple days. She outlived her two sisters and to this day at 7 yrs old still has uneven wattles, lighter feathers, and doesn't snuggle with others. She would rather jump into DH's lap for snuggles!

DANA as a chick was never a snuggler with the other chicks. They got along very well with each other except Dana preferred being alone at snooze time.

Guess which one is Dana a little apart by herself.

The more white feathered Dom at the front is Dana.

I was raising five but lost three to raccoons. 😭
Still have these beauties though!
Beauties! So sad to lose so many! Were your girls lost during the day or nighttime?

I lost a year-old pullet to heatstroke while she was laying an egg & a 2nd at over 2-yrs old also to heatstroke while laying an egg in 115 degree weather. I tried reviving her as she came out of the coop but she died anyway. We cherish the one Dom left ~ she's 7 now & very good w/ our 5 Silkies. I think the reason she survived her 2 sisters is cuz she was not a prolific layer & never layed eggs during heatwaves.

Now we have more trees in the chicken yard & 3 popup canopies for shade, & we run a sprinkler on low during heatwaves.

P.S. We have a Subaru Outback, are seniors, & love all birds & pets too! We aren't latin catholic but we love Jesus!
