Aloha,
I have a Muscovy drake, Grimlock, who had a prolapsed phallus that was removed by the vet approximately a year and a half ago. (I've heard they *may* grow back.) A couple months after the phallus, he had a vent prolapse, also addressed by the vet. And not long after, another vent prolapse. The vet found a cyst (likely the root of all his issues) after the second vent prolapse procedure, which was also removed, and he's been healthy ever since.
A little more back story: our first clutch of ducklings turned out to be five drakes and three hens. They're pets and poopers for our garden (not meat birds), so we've kept them more or less separated since not long after puberty because...ya know. We just adopted enough hens to have about 4-5 per drake, and are looking forward to (hopefully) integrating the hens and drakes.
But we're a little concerned about Grimlock. We're certainly not looking to breed him; we love him dearly, but he's a runt and clearly a bit defective. We'll be gathering eggs and not allowing anyone to sit. But I'm wondering - could he hurt himself if he tries to mate? Or perhaps he'll eventually give up, if it's not working? I hate to think of keeping him in isolation while the other boys enjoy their new companions, but I'm also concerned for his safety. If anyone has had a similar experience with drake prolapse issues, I'd be interested to hear how reintegration went. Or if anyone has other thoughts or advice to share, I'm here for it.
Mahalo!
