I was looking at a website, and they said you can put a small cat collars on your duck. I was going to do leg bands, but I wanted to know if a cat collar would be ok for them???

Thanks!

I think that one will be gone in no time. All the duck has to do is dive down in a kiddie pool and off it is. I've seen the cat harness for putting ducks onto a leash. I did order some leg bandettes, and size 11 seems to fit most ducks.

I love the little zip ties. They're cheap, widely available at home improvement stores or even department stores (sometimes called cable ties), come in several sizes and many colors, and are completely adjustable. They stay on really well, are easy to put on, and the color remains true for a looong time (in fact, I have yet to have one whose color is not clear after many months of wear). Lighter colors will get very dirty and dingy, but I can still tell the difference between yellow and orange, for instance.

When you need to remove one, just snip with wire cutters or, better yet, a pair of pet nail clippers (they're great because you can get them all the way around the zip tie but the blunt ends protect the duck's leg).

I use the zip ties, too.
Matter of fact, every time I am in a hardware store I look to see if they have any different shades than the ones I have at home. That being the case, I have 4 unopened packs!

To identify birds. I've got the bandettes with numbers printed on them. This is because I have 8 girls of the same breed and it is hard to tell them apart. With the bands it was so much easier and we were able to tell different personalities within birds looking almost identical. Some use only colored rings to tell the birth years.

I think the zip-tie thing is very common as a few ducks flew into one of my local lakes with some on them. The only thing I would make sure is that the cut-off end is positioned in a way that it won't scratch them. One of the ducks I saw with a zip-tie like band had a little problems walking because she was trying to keep her other leg from getting scratched the the cut-off part of the zip-tie.
