Duck/Goose Hybrid

The Egyptian goose is also a shelduck, which is what some argue muscovies are, and we all know 'scovies and mallard derivitaves can cross.

No one who does any work in waterfowl taxonomy argues that Muscovies are shelducks or sheldgeese. All genetic and isozyme studies place them firmly in the perching duck tribe.

Hybrids between mallard derivatives and graylags occur, and hybrids between mallatd derivatives and swan geese have been reported. Can not find my copy of Gray (1958. Bird Hybrids) right now, but seem to remember swan goose mallard hybrids. Yashima (1953) is cited in McCarthy. Handbook of avian hybrids of the world, as have 38 eggs of swan goosexmallard parentage....24 were fertile, 12 died within 2 days, 1 survived a week, and 1 survived, but had a deformed bill. Incubation was listed as 28 days.

Well, that´s really surprised me. I thought to be even fertile, they´d have to be goose-goose, duck-duck, like muscovyxmallard. I´m really surprised that they can even be fertile. OK, so then waiting to see what hatches. However, if they´re all defective, sick and dying, I won´t be looking at any pics.
Clint, do these hybrid breedings occur in the wild, no human intervention? Still really surprised, but I´ve learned something new.

Wow, can't wait to see how this turns out. I was telling my husband about it and he said, "If they hatch then it takes duck, duck, goose to a whole new level."

Wow, Ok. I dont want any controversy here......My pet goose layed eggs....these eggs were fertilized by my pet duck.....I am letting the goose hatch them....not making some huge deal out of it, and never intend to.....I will incubate all other eggs from her only because sitting is stressful on her. I am well aware of the huge death rates that happen with these hybrids, and I am not doing this to prove anyone wrong....its just a fun thing for me. And don't worry.....and sick/deformed hybrids will be humanely culled and I will not post photos unless requested of any deformed ones. I appreciate everyones responses, and this is leading into a fun little deal. I am loving all the links and feed back, thanks guys!

And of they all come out deformed? You say you will continue to incubate these eggs? Is this accurate or am I reading it wrong?
No, I will not continue this if deformed....that would be cruel of me......but if some do become deformed, they will be culled unless its very minor.

Update: of the 3 eggs, 2 have no development. However! the other has definite development, but i couldn't clearly tell if the embryo was alive or not. The turkey eggs were clearly alive and well

WaterfowlWeirdo,

Interesting, please keep us informed. I've had plenty of Muscovy X Mallard derivative hybrids, some of the Cayuga X Muscovy crosses were beautiful, and a few Canadian goose X African X Toulouse hybrids (so they were actually a three species hybrid), but never any Duck X Goose hybrids.

Final update for natural incubation this year.....(but dont worry I will incubate some myself too) The 3 eggs she was sitting on .....2 no developement....but the 1 developed for a few weeks then died....So, once she starts laying again....Eggs in the bator!
