Hi everyone I rescued a duckling that I found on its back outside he couldn't get himself back over this was 2 days ago and since I've had him in a small box with woodchips and a heat lamp with food and water but every couple of hours he ends up back upside down and can't get over :( one of his legs seems really limp but when you hold him he pushes against my hand with it so it's not broken. He keeps having spasms of some sort and putting his head right back and kicking his legs but then after a minute or two comes right and eats and drinks again but is not walking. I've been giving him nutritional yeast along with his food but no progress yet. Any ideas please and thank you 🙏

How old does it appear to be and what type? If a newborn Mother may have abandoned it because she knew it had something wrong with it.

I was wondering what type of food you are giving him too. Is it regular Ducking Starter that has everything in it to keep it healthy or something else. Can it get away from the heat source in case it gets too hot? Just thoughts running across my mind about it. I pray that it makes it. Neurological problems can be hard to deal with.

It's a bit of a funny one. The mother lives on my property and last time she nested all of her babies got killed by something so when I saw her nesting again I took two of her eggs and incubated them which have hatched successfully and are doing well :) her ones hatched and are doing well she has 7 and then I have 2 of them so they are all from the same batch. I've been watching the mother and her babies since they hatched and they were all doing great they're about a week and a couple days old so this duckling just randomly started doing this. Maybe he ate something? They are indian runner ducks and yes i am giving them the proper food I have already made the mistake of using chick started feed unfortunately 😅 he doesn't really move so should I take the heat source away? It's 25 degrees Celsius where I live currently.

Usually as long as he can get away from the heat source if he is too hot then he will be alright with it. I keep mine in a very large tote and the heat is only at one end. I use a reading lamp with a 40 watt bulb for heat for mine and it is close but not touching my ducklings. When I see them shy away from it I remove the heat. Our house stays in the high 60 degree F in the winter and 70's F in the summer and they do fine. He could have gotten ahold of something that he should not have since he seemed to be doing fine at the beginning. I pray that he makes it alright.

I just figured out your Celsius is equal to our 77 degree F which is plenty warm enough for the duckling at this age. I would remove the heat for sure.

Oh yes sorry I live in New Zealand and we use Celsius I always have to Google to see what the Fahrenheit version is 😆 I will remove the heat lamp for sure thank you! I brought some vitamin b complex and have been trying to give him it but he won't drink it or eat it if I put a little on his food so I'm not sure what to do. I read ducklings can be easily aspirated so I am nervous to try administer it orally.

People usually put it on their treats to try to get it into them. If you put it in the side of his mouth and not directly down the middle he should be alright. I will let you make that decision. Hopefully he will improve soon and you are most welcome. I too used google to figure out your temperature. lol

I recently had to give one of mine drops for an eye infection and I just opened its mouth and put it on its tongue and made it swallow it on its own rather than squirt it in it. That may work for you also.

I'll try it on his treats and see what happens! I'm gonna pick up a syringe in town just in case though cause I think I will give him some of that vitamin b complex. I hope so too I'll reply to let you know how he gets on 😇
