Having spent many hundreds of dollars the previous 2 years buying fertile hatching eggs(and many came off E-Bay) I'm paying more attention to the sellers descriptions this year, since I'm not in the egg buying market,And what I read from this really has me scratching my head as to why some of these sellers even bother shipping eggs,,,it would be so much easier for the buyer to just send them the money, and forget about recieving any eggs because the eggs are already so old,,hatching any would be a MIRACLE,,to say the least.

One example is one seller now says they have collected the eggs on Saturday and Sunday,,the auction is for 3 eggs,,yet the auction doesn't end until Friday,,,meaning the eggs are already 6 days old before they get shipped,,add 3 days shipping time, and some of those eggs will be 9 days old before they reach the buyers home. Why do people collect the eggs, then have the auction??? And make it a 5 or 7 day auction at that?? Hatchability rates on peacock eggs over 7 days old drops down to 30%,and that's not adding shipping and handling abuses.

I've seen several 2 egg auctions where the seller has 1 hen both eggs are coming from. The auction starts on a Sunday and ends the following Sunday,,,when both eggs could have been laid and collected by Tuesday of that week,,yet they hold on to them for another 5 days before the auction ends,,,Why???

I'm currently working with a BYC'er here on shipping them some OpalB/S eggs,,and my criteria to help them get a better than average hatch rate is 1) We ship the eggs no later than on a Wednesday in case it does take 3 days for them to go 300 miles by USPS,so their not sitting over the weekend, adding more days,,and 2) I'm gathering eggs daily and coordinating their freshness and shipping time so they will arrive before they are 7 days old.3) I've put eggs from all the hens in that breeding pen into the incubator to know all hens are laying fertile eggs, and not taking it for granted because 1 egg started to develope, the other hens eggs are fertile as well.

I realize some sellers may only have a few birds so getting enough eggs collected in 1-2 days may not be possible,,and in my opinion from buying in the past,,bidding on a 2 egg auction is a waste of money unless the seller lives 30 miles away and you can pick the eggs up yourself. The shipping cost alone is often the value of one egg. Yet we all know the saying "If it fits,it ships" up to 70 lbs for a low flat rate,,and the largest box ships for just over $15.

If your only source for getting Peafowl into your flock is thru buying eggs, investigate the seller,,do your own "Due Dilligence",,don't buy eggs from California if you live in New York,,ask the seller how many hens they have in the pen your eggs are coming from,,don't buy eggs in the middle of the summer when it's 95 degrees everywhere in the USA,,and if they cannot provide you with any detailed notes regarding eggs collected daily and eggs hatched,,,can I sell you some ocean front property in Illinois??

I sent a seller a message about this very same thing. His ad said in bold letters, "NOT A PRESALE", yet he was running a 7 day auction. I mentioned that the hatchability rate of eggs held so long was slim to none (ie: gathered a day or two or three, held for auction 7, shipped two or 3), and his response was, "I only ship out eggs collected the night before."

Sounds kinda like a presale, to me?

Now, frankly, I'd rather buy presale eggs, myself.... if the seller will promise to refund the money should his entire flock get struck by lightning and not be able to provide the eggs. I'd much rather risk money that way, than on eggs that have been sitting around for days, waiting for an auction to close. (Buy It Now works well, too.)

I sent an e-mail to the seller I got frustrated about,,their reply back was the eggs was aready collected, and they knew peacock eggs was still very good after sitting 10 days before incubating,,(she mentioned nothing included shipping stress, ect or almost nill hatchability after auctions end and shipping time),,so I again replied for them to read the exact text in their listing,,got one last reply from her asking me not to message her anymore,,which now makes me wonder if she can even read? Let alone understand what she is doing wrong.

Some sellers need to be given a very, very wide berth and be avoided if your looking for anything acceptable in shipped eggs hatchability rates. Some e-bay sellers are members here and are UPA members as well.I have had much better luck buying from them off e-bay than sellers I've never heard of before.

Guess when you get too much negative feedback you can start over with a new seller ID.And we wonder too those offering "extras",,,how old some of those eggs are? Gives the buyer a false sense of getting a good hatch if they get more eggs for the same money.

You know,,$20 used to fill you car gastank up,,,but that same $20 is still not as easy to come by..Granted using the internet as a selling tool requires somewhat of a "giving the benefit of the doubt" once the item is paid for, that the buyer will get what he paid for,but buyers looking for Peacock eggs online and wanting to get somewhat of a return off their investment should have set guidelines and reading listing info closely will weed out sellers who honestly have no clue,or really just want a quick buck. And some really has their red flag on a high pole to be seen.

Yes it is always Buyer beware. But egg buying of any bird is always going to be a gamble. Even with the best people. Bottom line .You never know what happens between the time you send em and the time you recieve em. If you get lucky and get some to hatch thats great and you get birds for a very cheap amount you pay. Sorry but thats the whole point of eggs. They are cheap. Most people quit selling eggs because there is alot more unhappy people than happy ones. Id never do it again.(duck eggs) Pain in the butt. Trust me.I never had a gripe with shipped adults. The best bet is to buy the adult birds by a long shot. Yes ,you pay more but you know what youre getting AND the seller has already got them over the "hump. " Just my opinion.

There is also an Ebay seller who last year sold eggs under 3 different Ebay names. I see he has another new one this year.
Threre a seller on ebay now that has used 2 different name that selling java eggs has 5 listing for 4 eggs each auction and will ship this week 20 java eggs in a week this make around 50 java eggs he has sold in the last 3 weeks. He has used Brad Leggs and Sids at Texas peafowl pictures and now useing someone elses pictures.

I was just on Ebay and saw these listings. I normally don't bother looking at the Java eggs but I thought it was pretty odd to have that many Java eggs available for sale.
