Hi All,

I have a big bag of wilted romaine lettuce that I got for free at my grocery store. With this possible e.coli outbreak in romaine, is it still safe to give this lettuce to my hens? Can hens get e. coli through food like this?
They love it of course, and it will keep them busy all cooped up because of the snow, but now I am nervous.

Thanks!

I'm surprised they gave it to you if it was pulled from the shelves as a health risk ..That's illegal to do.
A lot of times we can find reduced priced produce and meats at local grocers if it is at or near the expiration date. I've never gotten free though (not without a coupon ;) ). I have heard of people knowing what day to go dumpster diving though.

In light of the new romaine lettuce recall, I wonder the same thing. I have six heads of organic romaine purchased from Costco just before the recall and my girls would love to get into it. Anyone know if it is safe for them?

In regards to the newest recall, the cdc website stated that it has pretty much narrowed it down to romaine lettuce from Arizona. So, check your package.
