I have a 4 yr old buff Brahma rooster that has had yellow paste like discharge from one of his ears and shakes his head a lot. I spoke with an online veterinarian over the weekend since I don’t have any vets in my area willing to see chickens, so I was looking for some guidance as far as how and what to use for a treatment. She recommended trying Terramycin eye ointment in his ears twice a day for a few days and if that doesn’t seem to do anything, then try 2% miconazole. She also suggested treating him with elector psp for mites and lice which I have done. Any suggestions would be great. This rooster is very nice and I want to make him better……I also treated his 6 girl friends and the coop with the elector psp.

I’ve had people suggest different systemic antibiotics and now I’m getting a bit confused as to what I should use. The online vet said try terramycin first and then try miconazole. Smztmp or doxycycline was suggested for using as a systemic antibiotic. So now I need help!

Hi welcome to BYC! I’m really sorry about your rooster. Let me tag some of our educators. I’m not super familiar with ear infections, but they (the educators) have been helping poultry owners for a while on these emergency forums and will have the best advice on antibiotic use and how else to treat for ear infections. There are a lot of methods that don’t involve antibiotic use that could be helpful, too. If possible, could you post pictures of his ears and or the discharge if it’s remarkable at all?

Since it it’s a rooster and not a hen who lays eggs, systemic antibiotic might help a little faster. But I would clean his ear out with hydrogen peroxide and QTips. Then you can apply Neosporin ointment into the ear canal. Terramycin is oxytetracycline, so that is okay. Doxycycline is also a form of tetracycline. In humans, amoxicillin and sulfa antibiotics have been used. I’m not a vet, and if you have a vet to help you get antibiotics, that would be good.It is almost impossible to get amoxicillin without a vet prescription, but you can sometimes get sulfa antibiotics. Here is one place that has sulfadimethoxine/Medicox for the water:
