egg weight?

I have 32 layers that were born may 1, 8 are laying now for 2weeks this upcoming saturday. i pulled an egg this afternoon that weighed 2.8 ounces. my question is what is the average weight of an egg? and is 2.8 considered big?

Usually eggs are measured in grams. A jumbo egg is 72 grams. If yours is indeed 2.8 ounces (scales can lie) that is huge! That converts to about 79 or 80 grams. That would classify the egg as Extra Jumbo! I've had one egg that I weighed in at 72 grams...I thought it was indeed huge. Give your chicken some extra treats...poor thing!

This is a measuring chart for eggs in grams:

Medium 42 – 49.9 grams
Large 50 – 58.9 grams
Extra Large 59 – 66.9 grams
Jumbo 67 – 71.9 grams
Extra Jumbo 72 – 78 grams

my wife asked me to weigh it when she could not close the egg carton. this is only my second dozen eggs. i heard they get bigger after a couple of weeks.

They don't necessarily get bigger. When your girls start laying the eggs are going to be inconsistent. You might end up with itty bitty eggs, jumbo eggs, eggs that have double and triple yolks! The girls will eventually regulate themselves and lay a relatively consistent sized egg. I've had a Welsummer lay a smaller egg than my bantams. It was weird. If your hen continues to lay eggs of this size...you can consider yourself the modern day Fred Flinstone and make yourself a colossal omelet with those dinosaur sized eggs!

Thelma, my year-old Cornish cross hen, regularly lays eggs that weigh from 3 - 3 3/4 oz! They're so big that I can use one of them to replace two medium eggs in recipies, and they usually only have a single yolk.

Hi everyone. I'm new to keeping chickens and new here. I wanted to ask about the weight of an egg I got today. Using a food scale it came in at 116 grams. Given the difference between what we normally get I was actually a tad concerned. The chickens began laying Oct of last year. Any opinions?
