The egg below is from one of my roughly 7-month-old buff orpingtons. She lays an egg every day without fail and they have all had good solid shells; she has been a very healthy-looking/acting bird. I've seen similar soft-shelled eggs with a tail like this one has but can't find any examples with a good sturdy shell like this has, so I have two questions:
1. Is this egg safe to use for any sort of cooking given that the shell has a hole?
2. Is this a sign something is amiss or is it just one of those random things that happens sometimes? (Hoping for the later of course but thought I should check to be safe)

Other info:
  • Temperatures have been super weird. It was a dry 10F today but was a humid 50F two days ago.
  • Feed info: my chickens have a feeder of chick starter and a second, separate one of layer feed. They often eat a bunch of chick starter in the mornings and then go for the layer crumble later in the day after they've laid an egg; they don't just pick randomly. They have really not been fond of oyster shell grit as a calcium source hence the two feeders.
  • They get a lot of other things mixed into their diet; hay, regular grass when it's not frozen over, veggie scraps, meat scraps, etc.

I've seen eggs with holes like that but never a 'tail' - it that 'tail' part of the contents of the egg or is it a bit of something from outside?
It's either part of the inside or some other sort of tissue. It was soft and stretchy at first but had started to dry and curl up by the time I got it indoors for a pic.

It's probably a membrane then; I would open the egg carefully and see if you can establish where exactly it's coming from before it dries out more. Photos would be nice of course!
If the egg is freshly laid and all looks and smells normal when you open it, it's probably fine to eat cooked. I don't think it's normal though; at least, it's beyond my ken and I've done a lot of reading about chickens and eggs these last 5 years.

Just stumbled on another thread that looks like it might be the same thing: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/weird-egg-with-a-tail-thing.915191/
(found it from google image searching - not sure why I couldn't find it on the forum search)

Two stuck-together eggs was the explanation in that other thread. Maybe I'll see one more weird egg tomorrow if it was that, or maybe the end of the cord was a second partially formed egg joined to the lining of the other. The end of the cord was puffy when it was first laid; just didn't stay that way for long in the nasty cold dry weather.
