Hey all,

My emu is close to 1 week old. I noticed that she doesn’t do as great of a job as my other one at keeping her legs under her and straight.

It’s not an obvious splayed leg, she walks and runs fine but I’m worried about long term.

I’ve splinted her legs together and they both have rooster booster for vitamins with plenty of starter feed and dark leafy greens.

Am I doing the right thing, should I do anything else?

I’ve attached a photo before splint and with splint.

The leg may or may not correct itself. I’ve seen some adults that walk a little funny. I would try the hobble out for a bit to see if it helps.

Just make sure that the tendon is in the right spot on the back of the leg. Chances are the chick wouldn’t walk if the tendon was slipped, but doesn’t hurt to make sure. A hobble won’t do anything for a slipped tendon.

Good luck! I recently had one hatch that I thought for sure was going to need to be put down. But it straightened out it’s leg on its own! Thank goodness.

Oh and make sure the chick isn’t on any slippery surfaces. That will cause leg problems alone.
