Hey neighbors!
I am located in Florida and recently had the realization i am NOT PREPARED for a major evacuation and chickens....
This is my first Hurricane season with chickens and when Irma hit i was luckily able relocate them temporarily to a vacant rental home i had in a safe area. Our family had originally planned on flying out for the storm and i wasn't able to because i couldn't leave my animals at home alone, i am in a flood zone and i was expecting to loose my house to flooding (thankfully the storm moved and all was well!).

Are there shelters or do any of our BYC neighbors have any advice on how to handle this next time?
We are in Florida... it will happen again and i want to be prepared for the worst case so i can keep my Girls safe

Thank you!

How many birds do you have?

You could build a hurricane proof coop and leave them with enough food and water or cage them and bring them with you.

I have 3 Chickens. I wouldn't be able to leave them in a serious storm. i am 2ft above elevation so any storm surge over 8 ft could flood my home and the coop. And if we have to fly out i wouldn't be able to bring them :(

The coop i built will withstand a Cat 2.... maybe a 3 before i lose the roof.
(driving would be an absolute last resort because i have young kids)

ALSO this may sound crazy but are there any sort of "dog tags" for backyard chickens?
ive seen the leg rings but they are only color coded.

It is a risk we all take living here. I have lived in central Florida for over 45 yrs and my husband 52 yrs. Not all hurricane seasons are as active. 2004, Florida was hit by 4 hurricanes, one after another. then we got lucky until now. I just lost 1/3 of my flock from Irma. It is a risk we all take when raising livestock in the middle of Hurricane Alley.
The coastal areas are the worst for surge. Inland has the tree hazards. Living near major rivers also.
I know how you feel, and sorry for your stress and emotional stress. :hugs
