About three weeks ago, our hen Chicken Patty started acting down, standing like a penguin, swolllen abdomen, no eggs, no food or water. I thought she was eggbound and soaked her in warm Epsom baths for a few days, but nothing. I tried worming the whole flock with safeguard. I also did corid for 6 days thinking a cocci issue. No improvement. I then figured it could be ascites, but her comb was bright red. Attempted to drain her and got over a cup of yellow fluid. She continued draining overnight and the next day I could feel her bones! She was light as air and very boney! She started eating, drinking, still a little down so I gave nutridrench and scrambled eggs, extra food and treats. And she seemed okay for a couple days, now we are 8 days out from draining and her comb is turning blue and she won't eat, won't drink and won't stand. I doubt she will make the night. But now I'm worried I did something wrong. I read with ascites it is terminal, but draining helps them breathe and get more oxygen and prolongs their life by months, but she looks like she is cynotic and it has only been little over a week! Any insight would be appreciated so I dont make a mistake in the future.
Edit to add: she's a little over 3yo and normally laid every day

That is waterbelly. Give her vitamin Alpha Lipoic Acid on a little bit of yogurt .
It took me two months to get a hen to be more "normal" after having this.
Try to drain her again today?

There's nothing to drain. She's skin and bones. I have her in a warm room syringe feeding her water now. I'm concerned she lost too much fluid too fast. I've read that can cause shock. She cannot stand, is listless and mainly is keeping her eyes closed now.

I dont have that vitamin or yogurt, but I can try to get to a store.

Yes, try to get some. Can you make some Electrolytes to give to her? or if you have any on hand. It will be more powerful then plain water ☺️

Try to syringe her at least 10-20 ml of the electrolytes right in her mouth.

Here is my recipe
Electrolytes :
4 cups water
1 TBSP Apple cider vinegar
1/2 + 1/4 tsp Molasses
1/4 tsp salt
mix together and keep in a cool dark place.

I would just give her fluids and electrolytes right away. A tiny pinch of slat and a tsp of sugar in a cup of water will be good enough. Pedialyte, Gatorade, are also good. Poultry NutriDrench is great plus getting water into her. Once she drinks enough, then offer some wet chicken feed made into a mash and so scrambled egg. Unfortunately, ascites can be a sign of egg yolk peritonitis, cancer, fatty liver disease and heart failure (especially in meat birds.)

Thank you both for your help. Unfortunately, I just returned home and found her freshly deceased. I sat with her all day, but she passed alone. So sad...

Super sorry to hear this! :hugs:hugs:hugs:hugs If you want, do a necropsy on her. It will be helpful to see what was wrong with her.

You don't have to , just my suggestion :hugs

I am sorry for your loss. At least she will not suffer. I usually do home necropsies on any hens I lose, just to simply look at their major abdominal organs. I understand if you choose not to do one, but if you do, you can post pictures here for opinions.
