Ive added a new pullet to my flock atleast every year for 3 years. My oldest hens are almost 3(Buff orpington, light brahma and black Australorp) my brahma still lays fairly well and my Orpington 2 or 3 eggs a week, my Australorp i might of got 2 eggs from last year.
The rest of my flock Black laced red wyandotte (will be 2 ). Then all purchased last year (buff cochin, 2 bantam birchen cochins and a standard partridge cochin, thrn hatched myself a russian orloff)
Then 8 chicks hatched from my orloff cockerels i had to my cochins.
I have a variety but my little cochins layed more eggs than my standards.

So what breed of chicken lays the best? Im not really looking for super high production just chickens that will lay past 3 years and atleast around 200 eggs a year.
I know daylight makes a difference but after this year i wont be hatching for awhile so i need a few just to stay laying while i wont be able to hatch.

I did have a Cinnamon queen and she layed well but got reproductive issues at less than 2 years old.

Thanks for any suggestions !

I LOVE Rhode Island Reds. They are consistent egg layers and have wonderful personalities. I have 4 in my flock of 8 and I love them.
But I also know there are likely loads of other breeds that are much better. Guess we have to wait and see.

Our first flock we had 3 Black Australorps, 5 Rhode Island Reds, and 5 Barred Rocks and we got so many eggs, I’d say at least a dozen a day.

Ive been thinking rhode islands just because leghorns do get reproductive issues more, and ive heard they are skittish.

Thank you for your replies!

2 eggs in 1 year? Time to make some soup.

I agree with Rhode Island Reds - Pretty much the perfect chicken IMO.
Australrops a close second.
I like the Buff Orpington too. kind of a dull looking chicken but they just lay and don't care.

Is it the Wyandotte that look like gophers when they are chicks? I got some chicks that looked like gophers and they are excellent layers.

I can't figure out if it's the Buff or the Wyandotte but I get double yolks quite often. HUGE eggs.

My Orpingtons just wanted to be broody, so I did not get many eggs from them.

In 14 years I have to say my best layers are my Sapphire Gems. Nice brown eggs and they just keep poppin' them out. Nice friendly hens too and I think they are very pretty. AND they are sexable at hatch, so if you order pullets, pullets you will get!

Anything from the Easter Egger family would probably be fine. They don't lay so many eggs that they have reproductive issues
I had some EE before my 3 year old hens. I had rehomed due to not being able to show them. Now i show elsewhere where mixes are allowed.
Thank you for your reply
I have had great success with my Easter Eggers and Olive Eggers (FBCM x Ameraucana). I also love my Lavender Orpingtons!

I cant bring myself to do that with these hens. Ive spent so much time with them.
I do wanna do meat birds but these are show /egg chickens.

My Orpington layed like crazy the first year. Second year still decent she had quite a bit of stress last year though. Orpingtons are one of my favorite.

I do think she had gopher patterning id have to go back to pictures. She has been a amazing layer. My other wyandotte was to until she passed.
