Finally found something my girls would eat

Hey guys - just wanted to share something real quick that I thought might be helpful to any new chicken owners. My girls weren't liking anything I got for them, and I didn't know what to do. I searched and searched online, and my friend gifted me a Henny & Roo box this month, which came with feed called Chicken Chew. I figured might as well try it and crossed my fingers.

Lo and behold, my girls loved it. Gobbled it right up. I nearly cried I was so happy because it's been weeks of them not really loving their feed.

They tried each of the flavors, but really seemed to love the frisky flax flavor the best. And since they started eating it, our eggs have never tasted better and they're coming on a more regular basis.

I am so grateful to Chicken Chew.

I went onto their website www.myurbancoop.com and ordered more. I'm thinking of subscribing if my girls continue to eat this way.

I will say it is a tad pricier than I had hoped for, but I'm ok with it because it comes with oyster shells already mixed in, so I haven't had to purchase those separately.

Anyway, just wanted to share this with you because if you're chicks aren't loving their feed, you might want to give this one a try or if you're a newbie chicken mama like myself.

From your photo, it looks like what you have is basically a scratch mix which is in no way a complete feed. Be sure that you check the required label for the nutrients included such as % protein, fat, and others. Just because your chickens like it does not mean it is a complete or healthy feed.

Here's a photo of the card that came with the bag. It looks like it definitely has protein, and the bag says 19% protein on it. They've been eating it for about 2 weeks and seem to really enjoy it, and my family has been loving the eggs. Is the hemp seed not enough protein?

Looks like scratch with a flair. One lb of flax seed (or pumpkin, or hemp) in a 7 lb bag for $12 "Hand Bagged By Native Texans". I think I'll pass.

Hey what's wrong with Texans? Haha! I'm from Austin. Anyway thanks for the info - I'm going to continue to use this but I'll let you know if anything changes.

The OP brings up something that might be worthwhile experimenting with. Get some scratch and mix some pumpkin, hemp, or flax seed in with it to see if the chickens like it. Not sure where to get hemp seed, but pumpkin and flax seed can be got at health food stores.
