Hi Kathy,
Can I ask what dose of Cipro and Baytril you use? I have 2 chickens (pets) that are likely internal layers/chronic EYP. I've been using Baytril so far (~20mg BID) but I'd like to have Cipro in my back pocket if I need it and it's not too easy to find that dosing for these guys.....thanks
Thanks for adding me Kathy!I have a whole bunch more that I will add later.
I will use Baytril or Cipro on duck, turkeys, chickens, peafowl, etc, and I think the OP (@echix ) used both on her chicken. It's a personal choice. A person that sells meat or eggs probably shouldn't use it on their birds that they sell for meat or on the ones that they sell eggs from.
If I use it on one of my meat ducks, that duck gets a leg band and joins the "pet" flock. Any animal, other than peafowl, that were treated her with an antibiotic are never sold.
Quote: I eat the eggs after waiting about a week. I do not sell eggs, nor do I give them away. The meat duck I sell are never treated with antibiotics.
Or are the 500 mg tabs Cipro?
You say you have been giving Baytril to internal layers?
Why would this help them lay?
I am confused as to why you give baytril for what?
IF BAYTRIL CAUSES MEAT AN EGGS TO BE BAD YOU SHOULD NOT EAT THE EGGS.
I AM CONFUSE AS TO USING SUCH TACTICS, FOR WHAT GOOD IN THE END?
ARE THESE PETS SO VAUABLE?
Think this question might have also been directed my way, so I'll just speak for myself and add my 2 cents.
All ten of my chickens are extremely valuable to me. I raised them by hand, I consider them all pets and have and will be continuing to treat them in the same manner as I do my basset hound if she becomes ill and needs medical attention.
In regards to the internal laying, the baytril is not to help them lay, it's to treat the secondary chronic egg yolk peritonitis. I've heard that a possible side effect from baytril is cessation of egg laying, which would be much welcomed in my situation, but unfortunately it has not happened yet for my two affected girls. Therefore I'm actually looking into getting a suprelorin implant (hormone implant to stop egg laying) for them since they are my pets....now there's a whole new can of mealworms!! I don't keep chickens for the meat, I'm not even that much of an egg eater, I'm animal lover. They're special to me and I'd like to have them around for as long as I can as long as they're happy
