Teehee! I know what you mean about missing time off the thread! We had a 5-hour power outage & even w/ backup batteries that ran out I was almost 20 pgs behind when I got back on!!

Depression? I and DH take minimum 500mg niacin to even out moods. DH has GAD which Dr prescribed 500mg niacin daily. Mental institutions give a minimum 2000 to their stressed depressed patients. Saffron also is good for moods ~ I like it in India or Chinese menus.

& Yum! Yum! Silkies! More plz!!!

Don't worry about late crowers in Silkie boys. Our one boy didn't crow till around 8-8 1/2 months & then he wouldn't shut up!!! But oh, how we loved that little twerp! He was beginning to turn into a very colorful Partridge before we had to return him to the breeder :(

He was very handsome and I am sorry you had to return him. I had a boy similar to him named Ezzie. I miss that little rascal.

I suspect the partridges are both girls. I remember Ezzie who was also a partridge. 4 months old that vibrant red showed up which these both lack. I also suspect I for sure have 1 solid black pullet. That right there would be a 50/50 split which for me is unheard of. I'm still not questioning though and have given up guessing. They will reveal to me in their own time who is who. Until then, like I said earlier I am enjoying them so much. They are Branch's final gift to me and they are special each and every one.

I will say I still have to scratch my head over those 2 partridge chicks. Not the fact that they are partridge, their mother is, but she is silver or grey partridge. How did I get 2 gold partridges with one of them being a moorhead? The 2 blacks, I expected, they took after their daddy thankfully. The 2 blacks with gold dispersed evenly throughout, surprising yes. I can see how it happened though as Branch got more gold in his hackles as he got older so really no huge surprise. The 2 partridges, I honestly and truthfully expected silver ones or something similar to @Ponypoor boy Clyde.

Now the big question is going to be how do I go about recreating more moorheads regularly next year. IF I get a solid black boy and a boy out of one of the 2 blacks with gold throughout which would be the best option to use.

I miss Branch so much and seeing now how good his kids look it adds a bit more sting to the wound. The Poppet x Branch cross gave me everything I wanted in a pet quality silkie. Huge poofs and half of them are also bearded and they look so nice. Branch x Chiquita produced 3 chicks. 1 was Ezzie who I loved but looked nothing like this group if I am honest. 1 was a solid black boy that I rehomed and while he looked good, again he could not hold a candle to these. And then there was "Tiger Chicken" who in all honesty is her momma's mini me and was the best looking one out of the 3. If Branch was still around when this group hit 3 months old I would have broken my word on only 1 hatch this year. Every Poppet egg I have gotten since would have been tossed in the incubator and I would have had weekly staggered silkie hatches.

Right now my incubator is down at grandma's pad-locked up in her building. I was good this year. Only 1 hatch. Next year, oh next year watch out. Every broody hen is getting silkie eggs and that incubator is going to be running for a long time.
Silver will dilute red to gold or gold to lemon. It won't show as silver if the bird has gold. The only way you'll get Poppet's silver is if 1. the all black doesn't have gold hiding under the black (and is male) or 2. get a silver roo (not ALL white as it could be dominate white and do odd things mixed with all the various lady colors you have).

If you have to go looking for a silver roo (or hatching eggs), I would suggest looking for a bird that is 2 colors. If one of those colors is silver, then crossing with Poppet should bring the silver out. If the roo is RED and white.....the silver will come through, I think...but also maybe get some black and red or speculating the possibility of tri-color?

Personally, next time I purchase chicks, I want a silver rooster. It should open up some more interesting color variations.

And what am I doing? Browsing the web for tolbunt polish…. Nothing here in Canada…. Lots of nice looking chickies in the US though.

Guess I am just going to have to win that lottery so I can buy a couple 😊♥️
Well thank you very much, I try to keep myself in good shape! :gig

Had to find this photo of poor Mr P when someone broke one of his pin feathers 😢😢

Poor wee fella. Those young pullets pick at him all the time now.

Is it possible the white Polish feathers are more inviting to the hens than multi-colored Polish feathers?
