I have to brag on Mrs. E for a minute. She has been here 5 full days now and I have never, ever, had a chicken integrate themselves so seamlessly into a flock before. Especially a lone chicken. I did have to show her where to roost the first 2 nights as she thought she should sleep on the porch. That 3rd night she went straight to the coop and got up on the roost in-between Goose and Lilly. No one ever gets in-between those girls without fear of getting pecked from both sides. Get pecked she did, but she stayed put and pecked them both back that first night. They leave her alone now. She has to be very close to George and his crew's age. During the day she is now right in the middle of the silkie army. They are her peeps. She is also getting better about being handled. I do not have to herd her all over creation to get my hands on her. She still comes right up to mom and Rosie though no problem. I do have to work just a bit. Randy still insists on pestering her and she avoids him. He is not aggressive towards her or pushy but he has been dancing up a storm around her. It is for that reason alone I am checking all possible nest spots each evening. She may not be close to laying, but, Randy is giving signals that she is.
Awwww I am so happy for her! That’s so wonderful she has been accepted and made herself at home.

Hey how is Poppet doing?

Yes, I leave the weeds up for shade in the run. But I do mow paths through it, along the fence and across the run - so the chooks can run freely if they need to.
I think she was worried about finding her chickens in the growth but I liked both of yours and @RoyalChick s ideas

Honestly, I am shocked no one was looking for her. I have even scoured all the local facebook groups including lost pets and nothing. The only thing I can think is that where she was found smack in the middle of town her previous owners were afraid to post about her. Chickens are not allowed in town, not even hens. I know she has to be missed though. I also pray she was not a child's pet.

Poppet is doing well. Sitting tight and coming off for a few minutes each morning. If she is successful chicks will be here by the weekend.

It's too bad there's no signs of a chicken's age like rings in a tree stump or a horse's teeth to indicate whether young or old. Although w/ all the vet treatments on animal teeth even that's not an indication now. So much about chickens & what's up w/ them is our guesswork!

You could quietly put the word put that a small pullet was found ‘in town’ and that she has a lovely home now.

Sure hope Poppet has a couple babies to mother. She is such a character!

I was throwing down hay and looked out the door and it was snowing. Yuck! But it’s too warm for it to stick, plus the sun comes out and it’s gone.

The youngsters ran inside hahaha but the older ladies ignored it. As long as it’s no ‘on the ground’ it’s all good. I gave in and let them out in the run, but no free ranging. Except for darn Tippy and Butterscotch - twice as dragged them in from the paddocks, and once with Mr LC.

Suns out now. I must go see where those escape artists are…
