Well, it's now very windy and the dust is moving, so it is brighter.I feel like the sun is going down in the wrong spot or something. It's dark-ish in here.

No dust here but darkish & intermittent rain sprinkles for us...& the sun is slowly moving as Spring approaches.I feel like the sun is going down in the wrong spot or something. It's dark-ish in here.
Beautiful brown eggs! After almost 4 1/2 months this was a sight for sore eyes today.

Left is Corona, right is Holly. Top is my mix Squirrel and bottom is my other Marans mix Raven. I love all my girls, and I appreciate every egg they lay and they all taste the same. My heart skips a beat when I get those dark and speckled eggs. If silkies have one downfall, it is that mine lay white eggs.
Ooooo! Swedish Flowers! Greenfire Farms video'd them years ago & they were not in the least afraid but curiously followed the cameraman as he circled their pen. Some birds (like our Silkies) hate a camera or phone in our hands & run away but not our Dominique. I always imagined SFH would have similarly good temperaments.Yes, the wait can indeed be long especially for show quality birds or rare breeds or even really pretty egg colors. I am on a waitlist for the SFH’s I just HAD to have
I can imagine it’s even crazier if you’re showing or trying to get breeding stock for sale/show.
I'll never be that advanced in chicken tending. Only been into it for 9 years, and no idea how many more I have.
We keep it pretty simple here. I just love my big docile girls, mostly BO's, Australorps, LO's, and a few mixes. Cannot again leave out my Leghorns, of which I only have one left. But she does seem healthy enough at the moment.
We are actually having a sunny day here in the PNW. We've had several this winter. Very nice indeed! No dust here but darkish & intermittent rain sprinkles for us...& the sun is slowly moving as Spring approaches.
Me, too, though decided later in the spring, May 2020, after researching a lot. Into birds my whole life, and realized chickens would be a way to be closer to at least one type of bird, and learn about them and interact with them “in person”, more than training chickadees to land on my hand.I haven't asked at my local TSC. I wouldn't be surprised if people are buying chicks "to save on eggs." This is very similar to 2020, when a lot of people got "pandemic" chickens.
To be honest, we got chicks in March of 2020. But I'd wanted them for a long time and when hubby said, "Maybe we should get some chickens....?" I jumped on that and drove to TSC.
I thought about silkies, but it is so rainy here. I'm afraid they would always be all wet and muddy, so I've never tried to have them. Yours are so sweet looking!!!Nothing wrong w/ simple. We sampled a few rare breeds over the years & now we are simply Silkies w/ one older Dominique leftover from a previous flock.

I always liked the agricultural building at fairs, and my mother and I often went to bird rescue places together too. Sometimes mom would say it puzzled her why I didn't have chickens. She would have loved to see and visit the chickens here, but she died in 2018.![]()
