Whoa Nelly!

I just wish one of my hens would step in a stop the fighting when Mr P and Bert start up.

It is breaking my heart but I can’t have them locked away separately for ever, Bert needs a new home. So far no replies to my advertisement.

If I were home full time I could have two runs for them both, and swap them around for free range throughout the day.

But it would still mean in the winter someone would have to be locked away during the day. As the barn is were they over winter.

If I do keep Mr LC he will be locked in the Summer House during the day. I will need to keep him and Mrs LC in the feedroom overnight it is so cold I am sure it would be too cold for them even in the Hen House B.

I wouldn’t worry if he were in Hen House A with the main flock to cuddle with. But now I am so freaked out with him and Mr P possibly fighting.

Boys boys boys bad boys bad bad boys whatcha gonna do with the bad boys.

It was easy with horses I just gelded them, why are chickens so hard to geld 😞
I can give you some insight on Mr and Mrs Little Chicken and cold weather. Do not let their size fool you. They have normal feathers that stick close to their body, they are built for cold. They will probably tolerate the colder weather better then heat. Remember Momma Hen and her hillside hatch 2 winters ago? Everyone, every single flock member suffered some form of frostbite during that cold snap, some severe. Momma Hen hunkered down on that hillside was the only one unaffected. They do not need a heated coop or barn. They just need to roost in a draft free place, and they will find it trust me. Their size is probably making you think they need extra care just like the silkies. Silkies just need extra protection due to their feather type. They cannot insulate themselves like they could if they had normal feathers. Now, Mr Little Chicken may experience some frostbite to his comb and wattles. Cold weather, big wattles and comb it is going to happen no matter what you or anyone else can do.

Now as far as Bert. He is now a idiot pure and simple. I understand protecting Mr. P, he is your top priority. I am ready to do the same with Bubba in his dealings with Randy. I am not getting attached to Randy just yet. I wanted to keep Twig, tried forever to let them work it out amongst each other and thought they came to a understanding until Twig tried to kill Branch and I called it quits. Maybe in the evenings when you are home let both boys out together. If they fight so be it but be ready to intervene if it gets out of hand. They may cool it off after a few days and come to a truce. In the end if they can work it out Bert could end up being the dominant Rooster. Mr P is not young, but not ancient either. He may give way to his son and be happy in the 2nd in command position.

Because it’s very hard to find their chicken nuggets!

This just happened a few minutes ago. Poor Randy, just minding his own business. This is extremely mild compared to what Siri normally does. The she devil then headed back to Bubba who was watching. If he truly tried to win her over right then, Bubba would have been on him in a heart beat.
Poor kid 🤭

I’m late, I’m late for a very important date! My apologies, my internet decided to go down a hole and got lost for a bit due to a storm ⛈️.

Randy update.

He is still here and I am still undecided on him. I have not been able to catch him again dang it. I can sit within arms reach and observe him but the second I move he bolts. He and Bubba still have their moments. Bubba is still the main aggressor and 90% of the time Randy retreats when he see's him coming. Actual fights have happened when Bubba charges and Randy does not see him coming, but they are still only lasting a few seconds. So far neither have drawn blood and Randy has lost each one. Bubba's comb has not turned purple again although Randy's was a little purple yesterday. Randy is spending about 90% of his time in the back yard now. He is definitely making it his home base. He will not sleep in the coop. He escorts the girls to the coop and then goes to Momma Hen's Tree. There is something special about that tree.

Most of the girls like Randy but there is one exception. Siri, my buff orp. She despises him and is proving to be worse then Bubba. Randy cannot even breed a girl in her presence. He mounts a girl and in a second she is in his face flogging and she does not let up after a few seconds like Bubba does either. All poor Randy wants to do is hide from that she wolf.
Solution:
Keep Randy & dispatch Siri. My friend's Buff Orp hen was not a gentle hen, she was a terror. Hope things work out w/ Randy. DH & I are rootin' for him.

Oh no Siri stays. Siri is actually a very sweet and gentle hen. This is out of character for her I admit. It is good though, she is teaching him things that he needs to learn. Young boys need their whippings to take them down a peg or two. They not only need to learn from a older boy, they also need their butts handed to them many times by a older no nonsense hen. Young pullets will run from a young idiot only to succumb when he forcefully grabs her sometimes resulting in the loss of feathers or having their combs torn in the process. Siri and hens like her teach him to be respectful. You do not run a lady down, you do not grab her and hurt her, you woo her. She is not hurting him physically, just his pride. If I do have to place him or even if he stays, he is better off for the lessons she is teaching him. To be honest, she needs to go visit @Ponypoor for a month if it were possible. Poor Bert would be in for a rude awakening.
