Poor Dakota, just laid a soft shelled egg on the couch. She’s lacking calcium and potassium I guess. I supplement the best that I can.

Jealous pecking order flockmates may be hindering Dakota access to oyster shell. Jealous hens see another hen heading for a dish & immediately try to intimidate & the shy hen backs away from a feeder. We have only 5 hens that lay (Dana is too old to lay) yet we have 3 locations of oyster shell around the yard.

Oyster shell is not feed yet alpha hens still intimidate a subordinate bird from any feed source. W/ our multiple access to oyster shell around our yard a shy hen can be sure to sneak consuming the calcium she needs. I mean, w/a dozen birds you may need more than 1 or 2 oyster stations.

Just an FYI: Once you get it under control, you will start to feel much better - fewer aches in your joints, etc. High blood sugars cause system wide inflammation...getting them under control will make you feel soooo much better. It will be a process...but stick with it and know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Diabetes is imminently controllable - it will just take a bit of playing with/tweaking meds to find what works for you.

She's beautiful

She’s a pretty wee thing, but it’s driving me wild this flying off over things. They are even worse than Tippy and her merry sisters.

All the birds are beauties! You're right, that one boy is HUGE ~ he's got massive feet to grow into, hard to believe he was ever a little chick.

But Clyde ~ he definitely has gorgeous silver, he's eye candy & brave to boot!

Shortly is a big boy and he weighs a ton! I need to get him separated from the girls tomorrow. He is just too big for them. Even Pepper who is a good size is small for him to be breeding.

If I get a chance I will weigh him.

They will always get up at the crack of dawn & head to roost at dusk regardless of what mankind does to the clocks!

It will be awful for mine, I will be getting home at 4:30 and it will be ‘5:30’ for them. They won’t be able to spend time outside as it will be dusk and they will not be wanting to go out in the gloomy darkness.

And for me it will be bad - I already am exhausted by the time I get home With my getting up early and lack of sleep from my legs. To have an extra hr to get through will be very tiring.

Some one laid another soft egg in the Summer House on the roosting ledge - I am placing bets on Jaffarra, she was the one sleeping in that location and she was not feeling well last night.

She is back to normal today, I will keep her on calcium for a couple weeks, and hope for her sakes that she settles down.

Meanwhile Pepper-Larry hopped up on the straw bales under the sheet likely to lay an egg.

Well, my weekend took a turn for the expensive. Hubby and dad took out the water heater to fix the floor, then decided that instead of putting it back in they wanted to go ahead and upgrade us to a tankless model.

Today they are rerouting all those pipes and fixing the floor. Hopefully we have hot water by the end of the day.
We'll be getting something like 9 gallons a minute of hot water? Very excited for it.

Pony Sunday

I have a new lodger living here. This was on Thursday evening on my way back to the house.

And looks likes s/he has taken up residence under the back deck.

Last evening when I came in from chores at 8pm I startled it! I am going to keep the backyard light on from now on.
