Caturday Saturday

Came across these photos of a Lynx on a project I was working on, it was protecting a deer carcass.

Nipple waterers are at least a partial solution to the water access issue. I’m jumping around on the thread so forgive me if somebody suggested this already….I do have pics for SHRA…
I love my nipple waterers. However, I need open buckets/tubs of water for my ducks and geese. They need water deep enough to 'bury their head/beak' as they clear their nares by dunking in the water and blowing (it sounds almost like a kid blowing air in his milk with a straw!)

I want to go mostly with the treadle feeders, but I have a lot of youngsters atm, and they can't use a treadle feeder (far too light), so for now I am stuck with more open feeders - which, yes, I catch wild birds at at times!

Unfortunately until I can get the new trench dug and pen expanded with higher walls, a good part of the run is open for birds to access - with the tall pines, I can't just easily put netting up for now. :(

Molting In November

Last week it was 17F in the early mornings. Anna /Annie sets herself apart (she's on the left) a lot when she rests I think because of her molt. So I set up another panel for her there.

Annie and Tedi, hopefully not too triggering for @RoyalChick

The whole gang stopping to preen by the warmers. All the Spuds (Buff Orpingtons) are in their first heavy molt, and Hazel (brown Buckeye) is molting too, but slowly. The roost has been looking like a pillow fight occured in the night

A warmer day a couple days ago, it was Friday so I tried to get butt shots but you really don't want to see that, it's mostly just pins!

I've decided the Spuds should be called The Merengues, or Toasted Marshmallows for now, until they finish their molts. Or The Creme Brulees...
The cold wind whips through this alley, looking directly North, quick, get across!

But it was nice in the sunny shelter of this corner behind a red currant bush

I've been wondering if the treadle feeders were working out!

I understand Mrs By Bob's reaction. Most of our pets or animals will get sick and die before us, but with chickens it seems to happen so often. I know we should focus on the wonderful time we shared with them, and i'm sure she will in time, but it can be overwhelming when you loose your heart chicken or/and too many in a row. I also think sometimes I'm too emotional for chicken keeping ! Give her some extra hugs from us all. And hug for you too.

This morning I was thinking about the things that I do for confort when I feel sad ...and watching my cats sleep is one of them. They just seem so perfectly relaxed, like nothing in the world matters. It's very soothing. Almost meditative !

What do you folks do for confort that's not related to chickens ?
I bake simple cakes, read silly fantasy novels, and most efficiently but not as easily possible for all, run in the mountains.
I sit with cats and chickens to relieve stress. I write while sitting with them. Trying to focus on creating something. To acheive, create, accomplish gives me peace.

When I was a kid, at my grandparents' old house, there was a family down the road with a girl my and my cousin's age. They lived on a dairy farm. We would play over there a lot, often in the cow lot(s). Usually we wore barn boots or old shoes that we didn't mind getting dirty, but sometimes we'd run around and play out there barefoot.

One time we were playing hide and seek or tag or something, barefoot, and I ran around a corner and slipped in a big steaming pile of cow poop. Had poop all up the right side of my jeans and half way up my side... On my arms and hands where I caught myself. Yeah, that was funny 🤣

I don't know how old I was, between 10 and 13, most likely.

From last week. I don't think I've posted it here yet
:gig

Sorry to laugh at your misfortune, but I have also been down that road. Oh and I have had cows slap me in the face with their poopy tails! 😳
