Winter has Arrived

I woke up to this.

The chickens have not left their coops.

I have not yet gotten the shower curtains up so the wind is whipping through the run and under the coop. I'm guessing that Hattie might be alone all day. I need to get her heat panel moved down so she can stay warm.

I am failing as a chicken servant.

That video made me even colder than I was already!
I love snow, but that wind looks nasty. Not a fan of wind at all. We had a week or so of intense winds a few weeks ago. This week we have been dry and hovering right at freezing. For the last week the forecast has said it would be 4-6° warmer the next day with a high around 40, yesterday was the first day it got close.

I just narrowly escaped a disaster with Turkey. She got tangled up in Poppets feet feathers. I got her loose, she seems ok and is up drinking and eating great. She could not have been stuck long, maybe less then a minute. I assume Poppet was sitting down with Turkey under her and Turkey got stuck when she heard me round the house with a snack.

Turkey is a week old today. Just when I thought I could relax something happens.

Yup

Goes to prove they are out to give us grey hair and coronaries! I remember one of my mares, her foal was just a day old, I turned mama out and she went to roll, baby got too close and the mare scooped her up with her legs as she rolled back over and tossed that foal across the paddock!!!

Between my screaming and the foal neighing the mare was wild - she Jumped up ran to the foal who had got up, and she ran away with the foal from the crazy screaming lady.

That baby was Sally - she went on to live a long life.

Now I have chooks who are giving me grey hair! Tangled in Poppets leg feathers - well now I have to trim up my silkies legs and topknots! Just to be safe!

I couldn’t stand it anymore. My two worst molting birds are now in my house, having steak and eggs for breakfast too. Poor Coco is a mess, and Dakota isn’t looking very happy either. It’s look, feed and admire, but don’t touch day for these two! View attachment 4001481

Oh that reminds me of poor Henny, I had stepped on her foot feathers and she was squawking up a storm - I looked down and she was trying to walk away but I had her feathers under my boot

George is growing up and I think finally discovering he is a rooster. Of course his first roosterly act was directed towards me. Why not, Branch was the same way. I give it a month and when the girls start back laying again he will forget all about me and discover the ladies. I actually caught it on video. George always escorts me back into the house so I thought I would share it with you all.

I also have some pictures of my handsome little man. I love this little guy.

No that is not dirty feathers. Georgie boy is getting some cream like his daddy and big brother Bert.

Happy 1 week hatch day Turkey. All is well after our brief scare earlier.

My knee has been aching the past few days. I was supposed to shovel the porches but I can hardly walk. Guess I'll wheel hubby's computer chair over to the sink and attempt to do dishes while sitting down.
