I wish I had a neighbor like me, today I lent my new car out, and my friend needed my airplane for a quick trip to Bakersfield for hospital transport. So what, it’s only money and it’s Christmas 🎄
A lot of more rural areas are more likely to loan each other big equipt. When we were in Modoc County the Calif Pines residents depend on each other for many things ~ snow plow tractors, transportation down the hill, boat borrowing, cabin sitting, pet/livestock watching, etc. Sadly, can't get that kind of trust :( in cities ~ not that there's livestock in cities but you know what I mean.

I was overjoyed a few days ago to finally find a very simple page in french with basic colour feathers. I've been trying desperately to follow you and learn the english names, and I was absolutely dreading having to start all over again in french. But it turns out many of the name are exact translations!

This led me to a question regarding Léa's and Piou-piou's colour. I always thought they were red hens, but based on that page it seems they could be called buff, or even wheaten, with a black tail. I thought buff couldn't have black tails ? What do you think?

And yes, Fluffy butts are back at last now that some of us are done moulting !

Two of my Buff Orpington pullets have darker tails, not black but darker than their main feather colouring.

I can never keep buff, wheaten etc all straight. They all appear as some sort of shade of red or blonde to me.

Early Caturday photo.
I'm cleaning the barn tomorrow so probably won't have time to post.
He's called Gale. About 4 months old. He's super whiny and loves cuddles. He's also pretty smart. I used a live trap to catch him and he recognized it for what it was right away.
My existing cats don't like him. Purrcules has warmed up a little to him, but for some reason Gale whacks Purrcules' face with his tail. Peace will hiss and growl (sounding like he has indigestion) and won't touch him. It's the same behavior he exhibited when Caroline, Tigris, and Catniss the kittens were staying in the barn.

Ugh. In the background, the rabbit pee is puddling on the floor.
He’s a cutie pie, and a real chunky boy it looks.

♥️

The pics with all the French terms AND the genetic break down of the colors is FANTASTIC!!!

One of the Japanese bantam breeds is actually called Black-tailed Buff. American buff orpingtons are not supposed to have black tails. The black is actually incredibly easy to breed. My buff colored girls are either from my mother in law's flock or from offspring from that flock and my birds. When she gifted me my first birds, her flock was buff orpingtons, some Easter Eggers, Colombian and Silver Laced Wyandottes, and some Barred Rocks. (This did include offspring from assorted crosses within that.) The rooster was a Buff x EE and had the black in his tail. All the EE hens at the time were black with assorted leakage. His father had to be a buff orpington roo. With all the hens being black of some sort, black tails breeds through fairly evenly (most of the offspring had black tails). The buff color came through over the silver, but not over the black. It showed as leakage there instead. I suspect breeding the black OUT of the tail is more difficult (or at least has lower odds/ greater culling in a breeding project).

Whiskey, Pippa, Maizie, and Havoc are all from that stock.

I sometimes think I prefer Chia’s amazing colour pattern to her mums - both are lovely hens ♥️

A Quick Update on Hattie

Just popping in to let everyone know that Hattie is improved today. Finally. We had to force the left eye open yesterday and treat it with antibiotics. It opened on Wednesday but closed tight yesterday. Today it is wide open and she is moving about again. Of course this is limiting her movement to the complex.

Aurora has file fully chastised me for allowing this to occur.

I'm going to have more trouble snagging Hattie for medicine today but that's a good thing.
I was wondering about her eye. Wonder what’s up?

Can’t get that in the country any more either!

These Eyes....

Here are Hattie's eyes prior to treatment tonight.

During her health check and eye treatment tonight Hattie was a great patient so she was rewarded with all the corn she could eat.

Her craw was empty at 9:00 pm tonight after 4 hours of sleeping so she went back to bed full.

You can see in the video that after treatment her eyes were wide open again.
