Seven years ago I spent this day trying to coax a pretty chicken out of the bushes, the busy street and out from under our cars in front of our house. Finally it got dark and she climbed into a juniper/blackberry bush mess. I waited a bit and when I knew she was asleep plucked her out and tucked her in a box. She spent that night in her box on the back deck. The next morning out she came and happily followed us around the yard thereafter. And that's how Rosie came into our lives and we came to have chickens.

What a marvelous story and what better way to get started with chickens.

I thought about not posting this. I will probably take some heat for it but I have always been transparent about my flock. I am still so mad I am shaking.

Randy is gone.

He started turning on George this last week. I have broke up 3 fights with George trying to cower and Randy flogging him. After the 2nd go around I listed him to see if I could find him a home. No takers. This evening me and dad were out cleaning the stalls. I opened up the coop to see if Poppet and Turkey wanted to come out. They were hanging around just outside the entrance and all was good, until it was not. Randy came around the side of the house and darted and grabbed Turkey and shook her like a ragdoll. Oh I lost it and came charging with the poop fork and he dropped her and ran. I think she is unharmed. No visible injuries and she was walking fine but she and Poppet were immediately put up. People, I can forgive a lot of things. I give roosters every chance to succeed. I will not tolerate any chicken trying to murder a chick. This could be why Poppet has been reluctant to bring Turkey out of the coop to explore and he has tried to do this before. I put Randy down after I locked up Poppet and Turkey.

I tried with him. He was good in many ways but there are just some lines no chicken can cross with me.
Sadly, chicken math includes subtraction. You gave him a chance that many would have never done. You will get no criticism from me. That would have been a line where I too would have reacted just as you did. You have my respect for doing what is very difficult but necessary. :hugs :hugs :hugs

Merry Christmas from Poppet and Turkey. Little Turkey will be 4 weeks old tomorrow and is still a tiny little thing. I had to bribe them out of the coop with bread. That lasted all of 5 minutes and resulted in Poppet trouncing Spot, Randy and Judy for simply walking by. Turkey ended up hightailing it back into the coop and Poppet followed. Hint taken Poppet. She is still not ready to introduce Turkey to the big world outside the coop. I wish all my momma hens were this happy to keep their chicks up this long.

What little bit I have gotten to interact and handle Turkey besides normal feathering he/she is all silkie. Tiny, black skin, double toes and feathery legs. Nothing for a comb yet either but I do believe it to be a silkie type comb. Poor Randy, his child is going to look nothing like him.
What a wonderful gift for us all. Thank you. ❤️❤️

This is Middle, on of my soon-to-be-5yo Black Australorps. She is rarely featured in pictures, but she did pose for this. I think she will be the first lady "back to work," based on her comb, wattles, and face.

She says, Merry Chickmas to all. Merry whatever you celebrate.
She is beautiful 😍

Got my first green egg in about 3 months. I know the last few were speckled which come from Storm. This one is the lighter green without spots, I think came from Maizie....who was the 1st of the green layers to stop.....August...I think. Good long break. And was 1 of only 4 eggs....out of 29 hens. Good thing they do a number on the grasshoppers and make such wonderful manure...not to mention looking at me in assorted tones of voice...

Mrs BY Bob is in love with these. Wherever could I find these to get her some?

Hard choices we make...Males of many animal species will kill offspring they haven't sired. Poor little Turkey. TG she wasn't a new hatch or she might've been gone instantly. Poor Poppet too ~ she's so little she could've been injured defending Turkey. Randy had a rough abandoned start & you did your best giving him a chance.
