I just received a phone call from the sheriff’s office. They say that they have apprehended a vagrant rooster, matching the description of Rudy my lost roo.
But they have him in a kennel and said they will hold him for 72 hours (legally) if he’s my rooster buddy, I will pay all his fines and court fees, if necessary and bring him back home. If he isn’t my rooster, I won’t take him. I don’t want to train another rooster for fear that he’ll be violent with humans
:fl

Next stages of preparation for the Arctic blast are underway. Hope they are more successful than wrapping the metal bracket!
Daytime warming station is set up but not yet switched on. It is relatively warm today. Believe it or not I managed to get the cord safely into the human area using chopsticks to run it through a small gap in the framing of the hospital/brooder box.
I will add food in that area and an open waterer which they do prefer to the one with nipples that I have on the heated stand.

Next up is proof of concept for the hanging umbrellas. I figured how to hang them (I have three in total) and I sat outside with the umbrella open feeding the Princesses sunflower seeds. Hopefully they won’t freak out when they see it and refuse to go in the hen house. It isn’t quite in the right place but I had an easy attachment in place so thought I would try it out. To get it in the place over where they sleep will require me to toss some rope over the collar ties but I need to take a lunch break first.
I think it looks rather jolly. I realize that I have not thought about how to get it down again!

I didn’t know whether to chuckle or what - opted for raised eyebrows and a chuckle 🤭

Love the umbrella idea! Very festive also.

I know! Given that I don’t know how to get it down I guess it might become a decorative fixture until I have help with a ladder on the slope. Not really safe using ladders given the slope but with two people it is manageable.

Mrs LC is all snuggled up on my office chair in the feedroom, I put my egg apron and a couple of wooly mitts on the seat for her to roost on. She was all comfy and snoozing there when I did chores. Might just let her roost there for the rest of the winter. She can join Red, and Georgie and her twins.

Seems the chooks have taken over the whole downstairs of the barn now!
What is it about chairs to roost on? My computer chair ~ when Tova was ready for bed she didn't care if I was sitting on it, she jumped up & squeezed behind my back to snooze w/hanging head. She was our ailing bird, no cure for avian leukosis, so we let her do whatever made her happy till she passed at 6 months.

Back story is:
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Department raided and stopped a cock fighting ring last week ( good for them!) due to the APB being out on my rooster Rudy, they were swift to take notice of a rooster that didn’t look like a fighter.
I asked the watch commander to take a picture of the rooster in question. No return to my request as of yet

Can’t wait till Mr P regrows his lovely tail feathers.

How on earth can these boy sweeties carry around all those crest & tail feathers?! The girls are so round & compact while the boys are all so extra long & wispy? Someone had a sense of humor creating chickens!

I went out and followed the animal tracks again. No new ones. Got some more pics.

Another print that shows the shape of the paw...

Mystery tracks on the left (mine on the right 😆)

Measured the stride. About 16 inches? This is a direct register walk. It's definitely feline.

Old, stepped on, frozen scat... Unknown pooper. Don't worry, I washed my hands thoroughly! 🤣

More urine but because of all the deer tracks I'm guessing it's just deer urine. So that's probably a deer scrape in the first pic.

It went under the deck here at one point.

Oh man, I want a trail cam!
Those cameras are worth it per my DD/SIL. They have 5 cameras around their property which butts up to their city's nature preserve area. They see bears, deer, skunks, coyotes, bobcats, etc on night cams.

Wilderness preserve ~ I certainly wouldn't venture out in the dark. Bears have been caught on cams swimming in pools & raiding trash bins! Then there's the hiding rattlesnakes too!
