I have had eggs shipped here probably 5 out of the 8 years and this year I went wild on breeding stock so had 5 I think it was shipments. Out of a total of 6-dozen eggs, I got about 30%. Years prior, 70%. My own, nearly 100%. This past year was horrific and I've heard it from a lot of folks. I swear they play football with our boxes.

Instead of more eggs for a particular color I need, I'm buying four 3-month-old chicks, overnight air-shipped here, costing me a small fortune, but in retrospect, probably cheaper than all those eggs that went to waste that I paid dearly for.
I relate to this post. I tried my hand at hatching and it did not end up saving me money due to shipping damage, despite how carefully they were packaged.

Like you this means I am not going that route this time. I am first on the waiting list for 10 straight run chicks from Two Moon Acres for the Swedish Flower Hens I want. Had to scour the internet to find a good line that was not already sold out but I finally did!

She sends them at 3-4 weeks of age vs day old. That should be interesting but she says she does it that way because they do better during the shipping process. Quite different than any other breeder to be sure.

So excited to be getting chickens again. I miss having them.

I loved seeing these all these photos. They are a beautiful breed indeed.

I personally like that you have a breeder that only ships juveniles & not chicks. I've ordered only juveniles myself in past years. For chicks ~ I've done local pickups only. It's easy for postal workers to toss & dent small hatching egg or baby chick shipping boxes but juvenile birds need bigger sturdier specialty shipping crates & the crates are not so easy to squash or toss around like smaller packages! It costs more $$$ cuz the weight of box & contents are added to the total but has been worth it in the long run for us.

Latest on H5N1 (bird flu)

The nation's second largest egg producer is reporting bird flu in their Indiana facility. There are 2.8 million chickens located there. This will put a serious dent in the egg supply. The Midwest will be most effected.

There are also now cases of dolphins contracting H5N1.
I really hate to hear this. I also feel for the people that will be affected on egg prices.

When my girls start back up laying regularly this year my eggs prices will be $5 a dozen. Currently the cheapest I have saw them in the store in the past month has been $6.99. Honestly if I wanted too being fresh free range eggs if I wanted too I could charge $7 or more and not feel bad. I feel a bit guilty doing that as I want to offer affordable quality eggs.

I love your yard full of life & activity ❣️
I made it like that, because all around me is death, hatred and fear. You must realize that the criminal justice system has released many of those who I have arrested. Major crimes. The animals remind me of goodness and kindness in our world.

Silkies have longer lifespans than standard or production breeds. One of our Silkies lived over 11 yrs & even our cancer Silkie lived over 6 yrs so at age 80 I don't want to add more birds. If DH outlives me he can decide what kind of chickeneering to do afterwards. So sad to get old. Yesterday we were newlyweds & today we're an old arthritic couple! :old

TY for asking. The arm is no longer braced & just needs therapy according to Doc. My elbow has been in a sling for so many months it resists straightening out. The stitches are so ugly but Doc says they look good :idunno He's happy ~ so I am happy 👍
Glad to hear your arm is on track! :thumbsup
