Went to Ortho Doc today 1 month after surgery date. Doc peeled off the clear tape holding the stitches. 1st monthly visit in which they didn't Xray my arm ~ maybe I can finally stop glowing in the dark?! 😉

Now I get to do the fun appts for occupational & physical therapys.
Was he happy with your progress?

Anyone who has more than 40 chickens and takes care of them like you do, and stays smiling most of the time, is my hero.

I'm glad I had forgotten about that, because it's heartwarming to read that story again. It's incredible to have daughters from all those threes 🥰.

And all that just because your cousin moved up North. I thought you already lived "Up North" !

To me it feels like a very useful tool to help a hen that's generally healthy, but has laying issues. But I would not be able to afford it for more than one or two hens.
RC mentioned a few times that progestogen only human contraceptive could be an interesting alternative, if they are easily available where you live.

I hadn't thought of that at all, but it's a possibility.
The vet did warn us that the effectiveness and the duration of the implant varied greatly from one chicken to an other. Laure had such a hard moult at the start and she immediately stopped laying, so it seemed like she was very receptive.

I have an appointment for her next wednesday. I hope she doesn't moult so be bad this time with the cold 🙁 !
Such a strange hen she is. Both terrified and extremely curious !

Jam vs curd : I was given a basket of Seville oranges (I think that's what you call them ? Bitter oranges ?) and made jam on monday. Then I had a bunch left, so I made curd : two jars and a pie.
It took almost an hour and a half, not including heating, to make 2 kg of jam that I know I'm not going to eat. The honey from our bees taste so good that all the jam we make keeps piling up in our cupboards.
Meanwhile the curd took about ten minutes, it took ten more minutes to make the crust, and both the pie and the two jars will be gone in a matter of days.
So the next oranges to show up at my place will all be turned into curd. I just don't like jam enough to bother !

What is the matter with your health Alex ? You said too much, or not enough. Your chooks need you and your bad jokes to make them laugh (or not) ! :hugs

I finally completed writing three posts about Piou-piou's story. It was long and difficult to write so I'm not sure it's fun to read, but I'll still share in case someone who hasn't read it yet is interested.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

I hope you all have a pleasant day, I'm off to bed early. We say "go to bed / get up with the hens" for early sleepers and risers !
Oooo food and hairy coos, be still my heart 😊

I am ashamed to say I no longer enjoy baking and cooking. I make bread and that’s about it. I just can’t bring myself to bake or cook anything anymore. With just my mum and I it’s a waste.

Food tax
Curly and Fluffy tonight, they are still sleeping in the nest box, I am ok with that.

So, the way to Bosa's heart will be from food. I took out a mixture of strawberries, mango's and peaches along with a piece of a roll and some cooked carrots. It took him a few minutes but Bosa was the first to check out the treats. He is a fan of carrots and mango's. He would not eat any from my hand but baby steps. Like I also figured the boys are more comfortable with me sitting with them when I am not holding the camera.

Also if you look closely in the last 2 photo's of Bosa. He is behind Davy. I did not capture it clearly but I just saw it earlier and my heart hurt a little. Little Bosa is not solid black. He has a sprinkling of gold feathers in his hackles. Not many but they are there. You know who else had a sprinkling of gold hackle feathers.....Branch. I have been thinking he reminded me of Branch as a youngster, I did not need to spot this.

I will not compare him to Branch. I will not compare him to Branch. Friends, you all will have to remind me of this from time to time. If I have a Branch look-a-like even if they are not related it will be hard not to.
I think you will find that you won’t compare him to Branch often, he will show his true personality and shine in his own way. There will be things about Bosa that you will enjoy and cherish.

1 or 40 it’s all the same, I fill up water bowls and feed bowls same as I would for 1. It’s just the bowls are bigger 😊

The huge issue is the fact that they are time thieves! I have been leaving them in the Hen House now until I finish doing the horses’ stalls and feeding them. Otherwise I get distracted - as it is this morning I got distracted putting out hay for the horses. And it’s pitch dark at 4:30am hahahaha but I was shining my headlamp around the paddock checking fences, eyeing the snow and wondering how fast it will take to melt…. Checked the horses. They are also time thieves!

‘Up north’ - yes I am up north to someone in Toronto, but my cousin is in Wawa which is a mining town about an 8hr drive away. Now granted it’s not as far north (latitude wise) as many of the places I have worked, but we still say up north 😊

Personally I want to live down south - like the Turks and Caicos 🌴

Sounds like progress! Physical therapy is hard work - but it works, so well worth it.
Good luck!

It's settled. In two weeks my tonsils will be removed. The ENT took one look and went "yep those are bad tonsils let's get them out." The lady who was supposed to measure them focused on my thyroid instead and forgot to measure the tonsils.🙄 The surgery scheduler kept talking about how bad recovery will be and how much it will hurt. Lady, I can hardly swallow and it's affecting my sleep. I will take two weeks of severe throat pain to be rid of my tonsils! I should have had them out as a child!!!

It's been over 24 hours, incubators have been reset and eggies are placed. I have two extras that were stacked (breeder says it's fine until first candling when I remove duds)

I may adjust it down another degree to tune it further.
I mixed the two batches in the incubators to even out my chances in case of failure. Wish us luck!!!
Good luck!

It's Our Turn Now

More H5N1 avian flu detections have been confirmed in poultry flocks in nine states over the past 2 days, including a massive layer farm in Pennsylvania that has nearly 2 million birds, according to the latest notifications from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

Layer farms have been hard hit in multiple states, and the latest event in Pennsylvania’s Dauphin County will likely add to ongoing egg supply shortages. The virus also struck another commercial farm in Pennsylvania, a broiler facility in Cumberland County that has 30,000 birds.

I live in the same county as the 2 million layers and just across the river from the 30,000 layers. I am considering locking mine in the complex for a while.

Warmer days....

I think there are 23 or 24. I was able to find the brooder but I forgot to buy chick feed! It was also covered in snow so it's sitting around thawing out. Just brought it in. I will go buy chick feed tomorrow... can't believe I forgot to get it.
I had to buy a bag for the dumplings - a whole bag of starter for 2 silkie chicks…..

I’ll just mix it in with the regular layer mash in the morning for a higher protein. The dumplings are moving to grower now.

Well I guess by Monday you should have some chickies 🥰 how eggciting! And then couple weeks after that Jenn will have some of hers - I will get my baby fix ♥️
