I have a day old chick yesterday - 2 days old today that can’t walk. She kind of tries to walk and stumbles and then just sits again. She sits on the back of her knees. Her legs don’t go out so I don’t think it’s splay leg but she doesn’t seem to really extend her legs straight and her feet curl in. I thought it may be curled toes so I taped one foot and then I noticed the other foot didn’t lay flat either. I’m attaching a picture of this. Also attaching a side view on how she sits on her leg. I feel so bad for her. I gave them electrolytes in the water and gave her scrambled egg yesterday and today. There’s food all over the floor because I was trying to make it easy for her to get to. Any ideas what this may be and how I can fix it? Thank you!

Thank you so much for caring! Very thankful for this group. I was thinking splay leg would be out to the side more but I could be wrong.
You’re welcome :) I wish I knew, but unfortunately, (fortunately) I’ve never had to deal with it. Idk if there are different presentations. The educators should hopefully chime in soon.

Hock sitting and curled toes can be a riboflavin deficiency, and that can be passed from parent stock. I would get a b complex or super b complex tablet or capsule and give 1/4 of one daily to the chick. You can empty or grind it and mix in a bit of moistened feed so it sticks to it. Taping the toes (chick shoes) will help keep the toes positioned correctly until it's corrected. Change often, as they grow so fast. Some periods in a chick chair might be helpful to keep it upright and easier to eat, drink and poop. It also sometimes helps them find their legs. Examples of chick chairs here:

Thank you!! I don’t know why I’m just seeing this. I must have my notification settings wrong.

Is it a B vitamin specifically designed for chicks? I did get Nutri Drench that I was going to try today. Thoughts on that? I read some people give a couple drops from the bottle the first couple days and then dilute it in their water. I’m guessing it’s fine for all the chicks to have?

I’ll keep taping her feet and look into a chick chair. I hadn’t heard of that.

Thank you again. This little chick is of course becoming a favorite because I’m spending so much extra time with her trying to help.

The b complex can be gotten at any pharmacy or big box store with a pharmacy section, human ones, brand doesn't matter, just make sure it contains riboflavin (B2). You need the higher levels in a dedicated B supplement rather than in a vitamin mix, in order to reverse any deficiency. Once it's reversed they can usually maintain normal levels. The B's are very safe. Nutri drench is a good boost for a sick bird as it's easily absorbed, but more than 3 days can cause diarrhea. I always get very attached to any that I spend a lot of time doctoring, it's hard, or impossible, not to.

I got this one is it fine? How much of this would I give?

Thank you for your help and understanding!
