Introduction- This thread's main purpose is serve as a record to look back over journey from Ermine Easter eggers to purebred true Ameraucana's. It's secondary purpose is allow others who are interested in the evolution of this project and me personally as a breeder a chance to follow along with our challenges and progress.

I have kept a backyard flock for almost 7 yrs. I got serious about hatching this year and have spent the year accumulating all the infrastructure and equipment that our family will require to make this dream come alive. Currently we have three Styrofoam incubators. We are hopeful to find an affordable cabinet style incubator. We are making payments on a used commercial sized tunnel greenhouse. The plan is to divide it into two separate structures right down the middle. One half will serve as it's intended purpose, a greenhouse, and the other will be converted into a huge breezeway style breeding pens, covered runs, and lots of loft storage. We are still working out the kinks on the design for that.

We run our farm holistically. I do everything I can to prevent illness of our farm with natural medicines and whole foods, but are not opposed to using mainstream help when and if something occurs that truly requires it. But is never what we reach for first, if a need arises.

We keep dwarf dairy goats, several breeds of poultry, which I am in the process of narrowing at this time. Separate threads will be started for those projects if anyone is interested. This thread will be for our Ermine projects lines- one of which will be Easter eggers and the other a true purebred Ameraucana line. Maybe one day it will dissolve into only purebred, but we aren't there yet. The Easter Egger line is mainly being started at this time due to not having suitable Ameraucana hens to breed right now and wanting to experiment with what I do have for learning opportunities on my breeder journey. I learn best by doing, therefore I am doing 😉 I intend to log all chicks hatched on comb types, muffs/beard presence, eye color, shank and foot color, down color and patterns, and overall defects and type later on. I believe the progressive records of these hatches will ultimately serve to make me a better breeder and will help me to spot issue earlier on in my lines due. Just my personal opinion though. I plan to track progression on the birds.

Presently I have one Ermine Ameraucana project rooster. He isn't perfect, but no bird is 🤷 In my opinion he will serve as a jumping off point perfectly. I also have some Easter egger hens (super blue egg layers- Americana dad and white leghorn mother) they both lay blue eggs and one is all white the other is "paint". They have different leg colors, one is slate the other is more green. One has pea comb the other has a modified pea comb. I also have three black Australorp hens with the rooster at this time. I intend to try to hatch sea foam green layers from them, and hopefully get some pretty hens in the process. Black to ermine should result in black and Ermine chicks being hatched with varying levels of clean faces or muffs and beards.

I am on a long term quest to find the right hens for our true Ameraucana project. So far they are proving to be quite elusive. I have now searched every surrounding state to find someone either willing to let me transport them with a private service or close enough to drive. No luck this far 😞 Severely disappointed. There was a breeder that I found that I really loved their available pullets but they decided against waiting for the transport service for a few wks. My vehicle just will not make the drive. So the quest continues 🤞

For the True Ermine Ameraucana Project I plan to get black hens and pair them with the ermine rooster. Eventually I will run two lines, one that is black to dominate white and the other black to ermine. They must have correct type and excellent beards and muffs to be considered for this project. My rooster is lacking in those areas so I am searching for birds to make up for it.

At this point in time I select for the following things but not necessarily is this order-
•Temperament/personality - I will not breed aggressive birds. Period. I intend to create birds that are lovely family pets and completely small child and elderly safe.
•Standard of Perfection - a must for me. For birds that do not have an SOP I will improvise and use my best judgement to make sure I am using sound quality birds.
•Production- ESSENTIAL this is what they were originally intended for and intend to preserve this trait in my lines
•Disease Resistance - Resilience - Over Health and Well-being - Again absolutely essential trait- keeping chickens isn't fun anymore if you have sick birds- I want my birds to bring joy, not stress
•Fertility and Vigor- also essential to a lines survival
•I am probably forgetting some at this point and will come back to this as they come to me 😉

Ultimately- this line of Ermine Easter eggers are intended to serve as an educational opportunity and hopefully I will create some pretty birds a long the way :)

July 14-2024 Odd hatch today. Egg marked as Barred Rock mother, and our Americana rooster, "T", was expected to be a blue sexlink. A few weeks ago I had a barred rock hen who was being housed with our Ermine Ameraucana (true) rooster. The chick that hatched this morning looks like an Ermine chick even with a Barred rock mother. I thought this was interesting. Thinking it is possibly female, just a hunch. Has pea comb, pink/blue legs, pink feet, possibly beard and muffs but not sure yet. Photo included to document this. This chick is a pullet should be an ermine colored bird who lays olive green eggs. How exciting? Ermine Olive Eggers! I think I will pick out a suitable based rock hen with good type and put her back with the Ermine to continue to experiment with this cross.

I will continue to document the growth of this chick, as well as any others hatched under the same project. This chick has also been banded with a hot pink zip tie on it's left leg, to differentiate between Ermine Easter Eggers (black ties) and Ermine Olive Eggers (curious to see if this cross will create a sex link 🐣)

Late July 14-2024 (11:30 pm) Another Ermine EE hatched. Will update with photos of this chick in the morning.

Updated Photo of a grow out taken 9-10-24

Believe this one to be male
Also appears to have what some breeders are saying is the expression of the "smoky gene"

I still need to do further research on this theory.

So far the fast maturing Leghorn lineage from the Easter egger mothers is proving to be quite useful in relatively early identification of the males in this experiment. I am seeing exactly what I thought I would as far as expression of muffs and beards and pea combs. Some chicks have them, some do not. It's all about careful selection at this point.

I have noticed a jump in growth rate now that temperatures outside are cooling a bit. Which has me considering altering when I do hatches next yr - possibly to avoid slowed growth during the hottest part of summer. Haven't decided how to proceed yet.

Some of the chicks also appear to have the yellow leg gene while others do not appear to express it, which is showing up as green legs instead of blue. More chicks seem to have blue instead of green though which is encouraging.

I also appear to be getting a small number of dominant white chicks. These chicks also have correct leg color for dominant whites in an Ermine line. There is debate online though as to whether they should have pink legs or traditional slate blue legs. I'm seeing pink.

I have also seen several solid blue chicks hatch and one or two blacks hatch from this project. I haven't nailed down which hen is producing which yet but I suspect they are coming from one and not both.

I am going to merge my other projects with this record to simplify things. From now on this will include my porcelain mille satin silkie project, the opal and cream legbars, all my Ameraucana's, and the two sex link hybrid lines im working with- "Royal Blues" and "De La Cremes" which are a blue sexlink using Ameraucana over Barred Plymouth Rock hens and a hybrid cross between Welsummer over Crested Cream Legbars.

A side project I am working on now and will be hatching from in a few wks in a Bantam Ermine Easter Egger. I am collecting eggs from the test hen now and will be setting more very soon.

Our farm is ever evolving here. A delicate balance between artist and necessity. Some of the poultry here are purely for pets and artistic expression through breeding them and others while still definitely a creative outlet - are here for more basic survival type needs and a drive to prove to myself (at least) that we can take care of ourselves AND thrive while doing so.

"Self Sustainability" was the drive behind choosing two breeds here. Salmon Faverolles and American Bresse. I'm still working on bringing in breeders for the latter. The Salmon Faverolles though are here and I couldn't be more pleased with their progress. I took their weights yesterday ( 9-30-24)

*Will add photos of chicks tomorrow

Auto sexing breeds are proving to be very fun and will probably end up being the back bone of our farm. That and whole processed birds. I am making progress on the carport clean out and remodel little by little. Hope to have it finished by the winter. Possibly have a lead on a cabinet incubator in need of repair. I plan to fix it and use it.

All my hens are taking a break (have been for 3-4 wks now) for molting season. None of my pullets from this yr are laying yet... I'm getting VERY impatient! 😆

I have lavender and splash Ameraucanas and crested cream Legbars I am very excited to get working with. Still growing them out but they are almost there. Down to one splash Cockerel but he is nice. I have three lavender Cockerels and three lavender pullets. One of the lav Cockerels and one of the pullets I like quite a bit.

I have a very small mixed breed bantam hen that is black with lightly feathered legs that I have actually decided to breed to my Ermine rooster. Now I'm wondering if I should of chosen a lavender Cockerel to breed to? Decisions. Lol. The intention is a an ermine colored bantam Easter egger. The hen was selected due to her fantastic production qualities. Excellent pelvic width and very consistent laying. I would like to continue her genetics esp concerning the laying. She also has a decent tail spread and width as well as nice widely set legs. I don't like the leg feathering so I intend to breed that out.

Last big project happening here right now is the porcelain satin silkie color project starting. I was very lucky to find 6 very nicely built silkie cockerels to start with. They aren't perfect but they are leaps and bounds ahead of most regarding type. 3 are from an Isabella project (partridge x buff x lavender), and two are blacks split to lavender, the other is a black. I am very pleased with them and will post pictures tomorrow. I need to choose the mille fleur pullets I will move forward with. I have very nicely colored D'uccle pullets and maybe a MF bantam Cochin. I definitely have some mottled birds and I may be able to move forward to porcelain by just adding in mottling. Not sure yet. I have black and white mottled Cochin pullets that are almost at POL, and of course the new straight run chicks that are lavender mottled and black mottled.

We have chicks Hatching! It's 10-3-24 (3 am 🤦)
One blue Ermine Easter Egger Project Chick has hatched. 4 Ermines remaining and 1 BSL.

While candling some eggs in my other incubator, I was reminded of an incident that happened here over the summer.

ALWAYS CANDLE YOUR THROW AWAYS!!!! ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS!

Anyways, life can get kind of hectic around here sometimes. This summer, I was doing a routine cleaning out of my incubator and grabbing eggs from it that were over due. I did an experiment with staggering hatches in my incubator which led to several batches of eggs and things being rotated. And if I wasn't sure about an egg when I candled it got left in. That experiment led me to write the collection date and estimated hatch date on the top of egg, so it wasn't a complete bust, but it also made it to where eggs that probably should of been tossed were left longer then they should have before I started marking all of them. Anyways, I had a few eggs that according to their collection date (wasn't doing EHD at this time yet) should have been long over due to hatch and would be duds. I didn't have my flashlight on hand so I just grabbed the ones that I was fairly "certain" about and laid them on the dresser beside the incubator. I meant to come back and candle and then toss, but life got in the way and you know. So- roll around to the next morning!!!!! When I go to check the incubator, I swear I can hear a chick chirping. I stuck my ear to the incubator for sure it had to be inside. No pips and when I chirped again I knew it was OUTSIDE THE INCUBATOR. Then it dawned on me- No WAY- could one of the eggs I sat on the dresser really have hatched?!?! It's been outside the incubator ALL NIGHT the room was cold! Sure enough when I realized what had happened and looked at the eggs, one of them had COMPLETELY unzipped and as I picked it up, as if on cue, popped itself out to say, "Good Morning!" God forbid, I hadn't been there right when I was and it had fallen off the dresser! Now, I never toss anything without checking first. I definitely learned my lesson!

Btw - the speckled Sussex chick in my story was perfectly fine and never skipped a beat!
