fuzzi's Chicken Journal

I hope so too. Last night both my adult son and I were very stuffed up, sore throat, etc. It occurred to me that when the workers cleared out the crawlspace they stirred up the dust and dirt, as well as the molds and fungi that have been thriving there. My main bathroom smelled like mold, but it's better today. No gain without pain.
Having all that fixed should help or at least I hope so.

It can be a challenge to control mold in the hot humid environments.

I run a couple of dehumidifiers in the house, especially in summer. It's surprising how much moisture they collect.

Our central AC does a good job, but we're in the between season, where it's too cool for the AC yet too warm for the heat to kick on consistently.

All my chicks in a row, and integrated, too!
L-R: Martha, Hannah, Zacchaeus, Naomi, Priscilla, Abigail, Tamar, Silas, Johanna, Rahab, Esther!

Hannah is a groupie, is happiest with a rooster next to her. She became very irritable while we were roosterless!

No eggs, two days in a row.
:barnie
There are feathers all over the run.

But two of the teens are getting their big girl combs...

Johanna is getting a comb, it's just not red yet.

LOL
My runs are filling up with feathers too. I still have a couple of girls laying, the rest are looking ratty, but hopefully the new feathers will come in soon. It was 28F this morning but should be warming up over the next few days.

Your pullets are looking good. I bet you will have winter eggs.

Thank you. I got one egg. That's now one every other day...

But the nests are warm when I check. ;)

Today's egg is speckled and a little rough textured...unusual, but I don't think it's a pullet egg.

I cleaned out a good portion of the hoop coop yesterday, looking for buried eggs...or a snake.
Found neither, but I raked the cleanest straw in a big pile under the main roost...and they promptly scratched it all over :gig

I could have filled the cart twice, just did one load.

Into the last bed that needed to be refreshed, tomatoes will be pulled soon. I'll probably leave it fallow until Spring.

During the cleaning...

The low roosts were a little unsteady, so I dug under and added a couple bricks to keep them from shifting.

Of course that intrigued the hens and they started digging on their own...

I have one of the feeders supported by concrete blocks, but the other was on soft ground, and needed something similar to add height and support, but what could I use without spending money?

Aha!

Then I loosened up the area near the front, which led to more digging and scratching. And happy hens!
