fuzzi's Chicken Journal

3 weeks ago I gave nine eggs to a friend to put in their incubator. A week ago they called me in a panic realizing they had not turned on their egg turner :(. I don't think they're all that experienced at candling, I told them if two days goes past hatch day that they probably are no good. And as we all know, these things happen.
I have had an egg hatch 4 days late in the incubator

I think for chicks to hatch that late after their expected date there would have had to been some issue with the temperature, and would be an extremely unusual event.

They have hatched other chicks in that incubator and had them come out right on time. The biggest issue is not how long they are incubated for, but the fact that they weren't turned especially in the first week or so. That is lethal.

There were other chicken eggs in the incubator that hatched on time. I have been waiting since then just in case and no others have been that late.

My turkey eggs hatch 3 days early in various incubators, broody and people who get the eggs. Go figure

When I walked up to the coop a fight broke out, between Abigail and momma Naomi. They were flying/jumping up in the air, breast to breast, beating their wings. Silas ran over and appeared to be trying to break it up.

I've never seen any fighting between the hens, not like that. I suspect Naomi may have been protecting her chicks. And Abigail might be jealous, she's been inserting herself in the brooder, around the chicks, pushing herself into any family interactions.

However, everyone seems fine as far as I can tell.

I'm having fun watching the personalities come out.

:D

Pink - girl
Yellow - girl
Orange - girl
Blue - boy!
Green - boy?
Purple - boy

So...I put Sussex eggs in the incubator 8 days ago. I prefer to use a broody, but was resigned to raising them myself if necessary.

This is Rahab, two hours ago.

I went outside a short while ago to gather her egg and any others that had been laid.

She's still in the nesting box...
