Geese vs Muscovy Ducks

Production Africans are not as large don't have a dewlap and the knob may not be as pronounced. They are more active than the Dewlap Africans. From what I understand Dewlap Africans are more calm and easy tempered than production africans.
Kinda like the production Toulouse then. compared to the dewlap Toulouse.

production of ANY breed is never the same thing. They are less developed are more fertile, very common, lower price, usually found at hatcheries and sadly production african and chinese are why geese get a bad wrap. We were very happy to get rid of the production africans, and they new home is happy to have them.

only mixed bred bird we have is the EE chickens, otherwise I will stick with my pure breds

I keep both Geese and Muscovy happily. Chinese are a bit scrawny for processing but are the best layers among geese. If you have a couple of girls and a boy you can make a bit of money hatching goslings or selling the eggs to others for hatching... that should easily offset the small cost of running geese on pasture.

Muscovy are wonderful waterfowl to keep on the farm. If you get the larger French Production you'll get boys that dress out near 10lbs and those girls will lay you TONS of eggs. They also make the best broodies so if you want to hatch your goose eggs and you don't have a broody goose you'll probably have a broody Muscovy.

I say do both... I love my geese and my 'scovies that I keep on staff and I enjoy eating those who've been selected for freezer camp!

Which one should end up on the Christmas table?
There's just something about a Christmas goose.

To me muscovies are by far the best tasting duck - that is, unless you happen to produce some muscovy mules.

Muscovy, its whats for dinner. I processed a Muscovy and compared it to the Christmas rib roast. I could not tell a difference in either taste of texture. I pretty much settled on Muscovy above Pekin although my Pekins just started laying so I will keep them for now. Sadly, the coyote pack will only know what goose tastes like, at least for the time being. I strengthened my pen but until I can cull my current flock more beasts are not in the immediate cards. Still eyeing more honking geese...tufted, Embden, Chinese... oh my!
