Hello! So, i have a situation and cant find any suggestions what to do. We found our polish chicken hiding with bunch of eggs. After candling we found out 3 eggs where viable but one was behind in development. Probably laid later. First two chicks hatched and the chicken refused to sit on the last egg, i found it cold by the nest. I candled it, it had no movement and as I wanted to see how far along the chick was i cracked the egg open from the air cell end and while i was doing that the chick warmed up and i was shocked when saw it moving in the egg. I panicked and covered the large hole in the egg where the air cell was with a shell from another egg.l and secured it with a tape. As i dont have an incubator, i placed the egg on a heated blanket with a moist towel nearby to keep the moisture up. 4 days passed and the chick chirped loudly today, probably nearing the hatching. I am worried that it wont be able to hatch as i have secured the eggshell with a piece of tape and the prosthetic eggshell overlaps with the original eggshell. I really want the chick to survive and i am scared to rush things. How can i know when it's okay to open the egg? Would it be okay to leave the prosthetic shell off when the chick pips the membrane? Or should i leave it on and take it off only if i see that the chick has tried to pip through the shell?
