Maybe they were trying to figure out how many chickens they could keep in a shed or how many nest boxes they need for their flock.

I think a lot of members here could teach you about multiplication... It seems anyone who starts out with only two or three chickens has twenty by the end of their second year with them (because they keep seeing new ones they want and buying more!).
