@Isaac 0 isn't that a bit drastic? - I mean it was a nut, not a screw, nail or piece of wire. No sharp edges in a nut, it should pass right through, shouldn't it?

The concern here isn't the nut poking through the bird's lining, but possible absorption of the metals encased around the nut, such as zinc into the bird's body. I'm not a vet so I can't suggest how long breakdown of the metals around the nut would take place, but generally, it's best to encourage any metal inside the body out as fast as possible.
 
I found one of these self tapping screws in some chicken poo a month or two ago ..... Don't know who ate it, but all birds are fine !

Yeah, I'm very careful when I work around the house/barn/coop, especially with screws and such, even dragging a magnet around to retrieve dropped screws and what not.

I'm not sure who ate it, but I noticed no ill effects in the flock after the fact.
