help! I have a toothache UPDATE

I just had a toothache that morphed into an abcess. I was in pain for 6 days before I got it taken care of. The entire side of my face was hot and swollen from infection. Go to the dentist.

I had cephalexen(antibiotics) left over from strep throat(bad me, should have taken it all) and was taking that, but it doesn't always take care of an abscess according to what I read on the internet. Do a search on toothache home remedy and you will find a lot of different things to try.

If the infection can't find a place to come out, and bursts on the inside, you run the risk of blood poisoning. I didn't have the money to pay to have it pulled either, or have insurance, but I am so glad that I had it pulled. When I went in, they had to drain the infection before they could pull it and probably got 1/4 cup out of it. There is still dull pain, cause it is still healing, but the pressure from the infection is gone.

Take Ibuprofen, it is an anti inflammatory and is the one thing that made the pain stop. For me, 400mg lasted for 3 hours. They recommend 800mg and mix it up with another pain reliever(Goody's) every 3 hours.

The cloves made my tooth hurt!!! Try rinsing with Listerine. The warm salt water helped temporarily, as did a wash cloth heated in the hottest water I could get(and then I started heating in the microwave). Try an ice pack. I tried a little of everything and did get relief a couple of times.

So sorry for your pain and I hope you can find relief. I have been kicked in the leg(below knee) by a mad stallion and it didn't hurt anywhere near what this toothache did. I had no clue a toothache COULD hurt that bad.

clove oil numbs yes?

maybe you have water too warm or not warm enough for the rinse. as soon as you can tolerate it then please do again. it cleanses and kills infections. ever notice how quick a boo boo heals when you go swimming in salt water?

I also use a salt paste to scrub my backup water barrel (that I used for recyclables in the winter months) with for my fishpond. kills bad things

What worked for me:
swishing hydrogen peroxide around it a couple times a day (bubbles up, tastes gross) do not swallow it but spit it out.
Warm salt water rinses several times a day (1 teaspoon salt in 1-2c warm water too much salt will sting)
Use the clove oil with an eyedropper directly on it or put some on a bit of cotton ball and hold that on the area-it will burn like the dickens at first but stick with it and it should take the edge off.
The liquid extra strength generic ambesol(sp) also helps for the gum area around the tooth.
Motrin orally for swelling of the tissues around the tooth every 4/6hrs.
If you can control the infection at the tooth you can maintain the pain but if it starts to radiate to your jaw, ear or you start running a fever you really need to be seen. If you have medical insurance a regular doctor would likely put you on antibiotics with the suggestion you see a dentist.

yeah, if you can keep it in check before it gets painful next time. of course a dentist is the real answer. but at a twinge of discomfort I started doing salt water rinses. and it was tough a couple times if I left it go too long without doing it, the pain was terrible. but after throbbing intensely while rinsing for a few minutes it would soon go away. i do believe that this is best to address it at the source hoping that you don't have fever or chills.

no insurance what so ever broke as a convict will have to do the best I can . thanks I will try the stuff you all suggested.

I went a week with a cracked tooth from softball and it was he** I made best friend with oragel, i mean like every 15 minutes. Salt water hurts like heck, but just try it it helps a lot and after it starts affecting the infection it slims the pain

Whatever you do don't take AN antibiotic pill! You need to take a full prescription, getting one pill and taking only part of a prescribed set will do more harm than good as it will create a resistant bacteria in your mouth.

I have a 10 day supply of them. they gave them to my daughter and when they gave them to her it was a 90 day supply so I have a full 10 day supply of them
