help with my home made incubater do i need air holes

Hi im haveing ago at building my own incubater it almost done the lights fited i used a old mini fridge cut a pice out put a clear screen in so i can look in. Can any one tell me if i need any venterlation holes to allow fresh air in as at the moment its all sealed. thanks joe

Yes you need vents both for air an evaporation. Hard to say how many though. http://cmfarm.us/ventilation.html

YOu do need vents - the eggs breathe just like a bird will 7 the CO2 needs to be replaced by fresh oxygen.

You have to play with it to determine how much air turns over - because the amount of air moving changes the temps & humidity.

ok so do you think if i drill some holes in the sides and lids it will be enothe air going in i supose ill have to play with the heat maby a hotter bulb just worried how much air to get in its just still air im not useing a fan

I am going to build a bator using a mini-fridge also. What I plan on is using a 1 in hole saw and building covers that will be attached with 1 screw so I can pivot them in place to regulate humidity and ventalation. As a heat source I found a very small ceramic heater (only 215 watts and the sportsman uses 250 watts) and it only cost me 15 dollars at walmart. I plan on using a wafer thermastat.

We cut four holes the size of a small pill bottle, we then cut out the bottom of the pill bottles. You slide the pill bottles into the holes. I leave the cap on one of them for the first 18 days and take off all four on day 18. We got this idea from someone else but it works great!

when you open all 4 dose it not affect you temp

it might , depending of the temp of the room, and also the humidity, you have to keep a close eye at first and adjust it.

On my homemade incubator, I drilled 1 1/2 inch holes in the( back, on top) & the( side, on bottom). This allowed air to flow all the way through. I screwed canning jar lids over the holes. I could regulate the humidity loss from how much of the hole I uncovered.
