About 3 weeks ago an animal got into our chicken coop by digging under the fence and killed one of our little bantam roosters. It looked like the animal was trying to drag the chicken through the hole he dug but the chicken couldn't fit. My husband went out to feed the chickens and found her still alive so ber brought her in the house.

She had a chunk taken out of her neck and we treated that with some "dermal wound cleaner" (it's all we had). As far as we knew that was the only wound we saw. She was doing pretty good since she was standing (on one foot), eating, drinking, and even making little sounds when we'd come see her.

It has now been about 3 weeks and she can't stand up anymore. We couldn't figure out why. Today we thought maybe she was getting depressed so we brought her outside to clean her cage and sit with the other chickens hoping she would try to stand. When we were picking her up we noticed she might have had another wound under her wing. We did not clean that wound and we think her poop might have gotten in it. We're not sure if it's just matted poop or what.

If it is a wound that we didn't clean, what would be something that we can do to help her? Is there a way we can tell if its infected? We can't take her to the vet because we can't afford it. We have been giving her electrolytes in her water. She eats and drinks fine. She's just not standing up anymore. She tries to with her other leg but can't.

Her name is Lucky and she is 3 years old.

I'll attach pictures below of what she looks like. Also her poop is runny.

Edit: We also think she might have a broken wing because her wing was caught on the fence when the attacker was trying to drag her out.

Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry about your hen.

Do the wounds have a bad odor?

If possible, I'd get some Chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) and clean all the wounds very well, flush them out, lightly scrub and pick out any debris, etc. Go slow, if she becomes really stressed, stop and work on it in stages.
Once cleaned, apply triple antibiotic ointment to the wounds to help keep them moist.

She may benefit from an antibiotic. Baytril would be a good choice.

You can order Baytril online.

I cant really tell about the oder until we give her a bath, she's got some poop on her. I will clean her up and see if there are wounds and then apply ointment.

Thanks for the advice! I really need it.

I would get her cleaned up really good so you can see the wounds better. With her being outside like that I fear maggots may have gotten in there. They would be attracted to the lovely poop on her. Or has she been inside all this time?

She's been inside all this time and we don't have many bugs around in the house

She's doing a lot better now, he's able to stand on both feet a little bit. We've taken her outside under supervision to hang out with the other chickens on a nice day. Some of them don't mind her, but some of them, including our rooster, will bite her. Her poop is worrying us a little because it's all just watery and no solids. She won't move her injured wing at all and we still don't know what to do about that. But so far she's been thriving!

Do you not have any vets that will take birds?
Birds in a flock will usually kill a weak member, and not for nothing, it sounds like your girl isn’t good.
I hope everything works out.

I'm glad to hear she's doing a little better.

I'd work on getting vitamins into her and see that she's eating. You can give her bits of egg or fish (sardines, tuna) a few times a week to give her a protein boost.

The wing may be broken, hard to know. You may find that she won't fully recover and will need to be housed separately from the rooster and other hens. Time will tell.

Keep us updated.
