How do you spell Grey/gray?

Gray is the preferred American spelling, grey is the preferred British spelling. Either is mainly acceptably, though I've had a few teachers who took marks off for using the British grey instead of the American gray.

Both spellings are acceptable - under most circumstances. However! The street on which I live begins with Gray-. If someone sends me mail with it spelled Grey-, my postal person can't tell the difference between that and Gregory, which is the name of another road on his/her route (the carrier changes, the problem remains, lol) Over the years, I have had a lot of mail get misdirected. Thank goodness the person on Gregory doesn't just throw it away!

Thanks! I don't know why I asked.. maybe its bc I have wondered which spelling ever since I was younger and learned my words. I have asked many times, but never gotten a good answer

Definitely the other way around in British schools.

My understanding (and I know I'm right!) is that Britons have always spelt (Britons can also spell that 'spelled') the word with an 'e'. For some reason, you folks in the US have decided to spell it differently. Explain yourselves, other wise I may deduct marks!
