How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

4 today and it looks like a couple are trying to molt which explains why those 2 have stopped laying. Not entirely sure how it works for their first adult molt but I hope it is only a short molt as the weather is NOT ideal at all. Should be -1 tomorrow night so I'll be keeping an eye on a few individuals including my frizzle who so far has been doing just fine with MI winter. If she does fine this winter I may end up hatching some of her eggs, if she ever lays that is! Isn't 10 months quite late to start laying? I hope she isn't one of those oddball unproductive hens, if she is then I guess she can be the first pet chicken that doesn't pay rent.

I think how chicken walks is so adorable and so very endearing.
They are a bunch of hooligans hahaha. Today I was working at some renovations in the barn, and the chooks just had to help.

They kept getting under foot, tripping me up, more than once I trod on someone’s toes and they would squawk. I was replacing stall walls, and every time I placed a board and tried to put the level on the board someone would hop up on the level.

Then when I was cutting boards they would hop up on the board mid cut. Sheesh!

Anywhoo…

15 lovely eggs today, my older ladies who are finally finishing moulting are starting back laying.

It’s rather late in the year to moult but this year it seems anything goes! Just keep an eye on them for cold stress: not being active digging etc, not eating or drinking.

I broke down and bought a carbon fibre IR heat lamp for the gang, they have been showing some signs of cold stress a few weeks ago with the last blast of arctic air. Haven’t had a chance today to put it up, my Hen House is insulated and the birds keep it at around 5C at night. So I only need the lamp during the daytime.

I have a couple of Sweeter Heaters also but I have one with my elderly ladies and the other with my dingaling silkie pullet who went broody, I ended up giving her two chicks to raise, she just wouldn’t stop being broody.

Which reminds me - I will need to get someone to collect eggs I guess, while I am at work.

Mine are in their first adult molt now, too, they hatched in March. Weird timing in winter, isn't it? I've been feeding them salmon and sardines for extra protein, it seems to be helping (and they love it).
