Yea, were newbees over here...

We are about to hatch our first batch of chicks in our homemade bator next weekend!!!

Was wondering tho, how much space do the eggs need to hatch? They look a bit crowded in there, an many eggs are touching. Will that bother the chicks?

Thought we'd thin out the eggs a bit. But after candling, it appears that all 22 are fertile, and growing!

Thanks!

When I move my eggs from the incubator to the hatcher, they're packed in there fairly close. They can move a bit but I like them close so when one chick moves out he bumps the other eggs around a bit to encourage the other chicks to hatch. The incubator holds 270 eggs, figure 240 make it to lockdown, all 240 fit in 4 trays.

How'd they do? I've got the same issue, bit of a sardine can and I hear critters peeping at me!
I've had incubators with pretty much wall-to-wall eggs with very successful hatch rate. As long as they have just a little wiggle room. I actually prefer a little bit of a tight squeeze since it keeps the early hatchers from kicking the stranglers around so much. Good luck with your hatch!
