How to make homemade dog toothpaste?

My dog's breathe smells really bad. Probably because she enjoys eating chicken poop.

Does anyone know of an easy homemade dog toothpaste recipe?

Firstly, check her teeth. Small dogs (assuming you are talking about the one in your profile pic) often have yucky, rotting, teeth. If there is major plaque build up, or black/brown along the gums, no amount of brushing will help. A vet will need to clean the teeth. Look at her gums. Are they pink, or red? Red or white can indicate gum problems. Again, brushing will be minimal help.

Toothpaste is not really needed. Take a rough cloth (like a facecloth) and wipe all along the gum line, and teeth. I have had better results with a cloth than a toothbrush with my chihuahua.

The dog in my profile picture is my dog as a puppy, she is now 60lbs. I also have a 40lbs border collie. I just checked their gums and they are pink.

i use a very simple formular for my dogs toothpaste and tooth brush...i use the same stuff for my cats too...its called raw meaty bones...rec bones (soup bones femur ect) with a little meat left on once a week or so keep the teeth shiney and new.

no honestly...our dogs range from 3lbs to 30lbs and from 2yrs to almost 10 years old.
we free feed dry food (it works for us) and they occasionally get a chicken or turkey neck ect, and once a week or so they each get a size apropriate soup bone.
weve NEVER brushed teeth, and NEVER had any of thier teeth cleaned...the vet always comments on how beautiful our dogs teeth are because only the now almost 10 yr old is starting to show any real wear and theres no tartar or plaque build up.

we actually just took the 10 yr old cocker spaneil in to the vet for his rabies shot...our vet is on maternity so we saw a stand in...
the vet took a look over him and looked puzzled...then refused to give the vaccination basing it that the dog we brought in COULDNT be the dog he had the file on because there was no way in hell the dog was almost 10 years old based on his teeth and overall condition.
once the staff convinced him that that was the right file and right dog the vet then inssited that the dog in question must be much younger than we THINK because his teeth are showing signs that the dog is only mabe 3-5 years old...and that the person we got the dog off must have lied...

we explained that weve had the dog since he was 10 weeks old, he is almost 10 years old and yes those are his real teeth with NO toothpaste no cleanings ect...he then refused to belive us that the dog had never had any dental cleanings ect and we must "brush" twice daily...

nope just one good ole fresh bone about once a week.
its kinda ammusing lol.

the only time we have breath issues is for about 15 mins after theyve managed to graze in the litterbox, at which point i typically offer them some home made mint and parsely cookies.
mint and parsley are both veyr good breath fresheners you can use any dog cookie recipie and just add a a good dash of chopped mnt and a good dash of chopped parsely to the mix before shaping/cutting/baking.

What bones do you use for your dogs?

We give bones regularly as well - marrow bones mostly or brisket and have never had a problem with smelly breath, and all my boys have lovely white teeth - even my 12 and a half year old staffy!
My mums dog though, well! They gave him chicken necks as bones didnt agree with him and he had smelly breath but it was a gum issue - their vet gave them some tablets and he was all cleared up - it was like magic!

What bagendhens said is true - I feed dry feed to my dog and give bones. If your dog is big enough go to your local butcher and get some raw beef bones and let your dog have at one about once a week or so. They can, and will, eat them. Don't worry - just DON'T give cooked bones! You can even give raw chicken - I've given raw chicken drumettes from the store as treats - they love them!

Other things that might help are those doggy bone toothbrushes at the store or bully stick chews (just make sure and buy those from a good supplier so you get some that won't stink and won't be treated with chemicals).

Worse case scenario your dog may need a cleaning at the vet but my dogs never have and their breath doesn't stink. IDK if I'm just lucky or what but...that's what works for me.

It isn't their teeth that is the problem, but rather their breathe. Their teeth are very white.
I feed them a dog food called "Gravy Train", and they get rawhide bones on occasion.

I think anyone who feeds commercial dog food (especially wet food) to their dog can expect bad breath, bad farts, and a smelly dog overall.
Most people who do feed com/feed will now jump up and down saying "My dog doesnt smell"........yeah,right.
Anyway.....having owned work dogs all my working life, (sheep and cattle) I have only ever fed two things.......raw meat and raw bones. The only raw meat that ever makes them smell is Kangaroo.
I am retired now but still have a dog, the only work she does is putting the chooks away every night. She is 2 years old and weighs 83kgs or 183lb. I am off the farm now so dont kill our own meat but the local butcher looks after her and she eats ONLY raw meat and raw bones.
In 60 odd years of owning and working dogs I have NEVER given a dog "People Food" or commercial food.
