Hello Everyone,

I have found myself reading on this site multiple times, and have read some really great threads. So, I finally decided to join the club. I previously owned 4 hens years and years ago. They were the absolute best, and I loved them very much! They were highly intelligent, and they do not get the credit they deserve... In April of this year, I went to the Tack Shack in Oviedo FL., and purchased 10 Buff Orpington hens, however I ended up with 9 hens and one Roo. I wasn't planning on that. He does hold a special spot in my heart, since raising him from a little tiny fella 😀 Now that he is 8 months old, he has his days, but overall he isn't too much of a bad boy. After all he has 9 girls to look after. We have 6 acres and I let them out at 10a.m. and they go back to their coop around 3:30-4:00 One of my dogs is not real happy about these chickens, so I try to split it up fairly. They do not fuss at all about going up that early. We have a large coup 12x24 but, we don't have a run. They have complete free range all over the property. My hens are now bolting out in the morning, to their secret nests. I have not tried the wooden eggs or golf balls yet, but hoping they will start laying in their nest boxes again. We are going to revise it a bit more, and make them more private. I look forward to interacting on here, with like minded people!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Nice introduction! Once they start laying outside it can be difficult to retrain them to use the nest boxes. It might be helpful to add a run to your coop and then keep them inside till mid morning or when they are done laying. This will help teach them where you want them to lay.

Best wishes with your flock and welcome to ours!

A Big Welcome to You to BYC.

I can feel your excitement reading about your flock and you have come to the right place BYC. You will have a great time here, will learn many things about chickens and support from BYC.

Welcome and Love to have you join.:welcome
Thank you very much for the welcoming me to BYC! I look forward to a lot of time spent on here.😀

I know a lot of people that love their Buff Orpington roosters. I hope he stays a nice good boy for you. He's only a cockerel now, so hopefully he will grow out of any bad behaviors. I know I like having a rooster, as long as they aren't aggressive and treat the flock well.

Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!

Thank you so much! Yes, we have some work to do with our girls, I am sure I will figure out how to keep them laying in their boxes, especially joining BYC! It might take a lot of work and dedication, but I am down for a great challenge😀 Thanks for the warm welcome!
