Howdy! Our 5.5 week old Delaware sexed pullet from the local Wilco Farm Store is not feathering out as expected. Not seeing neck barring or smut, no black tail feather- pure white, yellow legs and a large-ish yellow comb that’s beginning to pink. Beginnings of pinks wattles. What do we think? White leghorn pullet? Cockerel? Other breed?TY!

@SweetieChicken234 can I ask you to please weigh in on this? I see you breed Delawares! As of today we have a single black tail feather with no barring. Wattles are a little bigger today than Friday. 6 weeks old, and photos above are otherwise still a good representation. Purchased at Wilco Farm store here in WA (Hoovers, or another hatchery birds).

Looks like a cockerel but not of a pure Delaware at that age. Looks to be either a different breed or mixed Delaware. A single black tail feather that isn't barred? That's odd. No barring indicates female but I've never seen such comb and wattles growth at 6 weeks on a Delaware pullet.

My line of Delawares from the breeder has pullets that took longer than usual to feather out any black. None of them had any such comb or wattle growth until about 12 weeks.

This is a very sus Delaware pullet. By comb and wattles I would say male. By tail feather possible pullet.

Both my hatchery Delawares and my breeder lines all males have had smut by 6 weeks.

Thank you! Right? Very sus.

Have you heard about dominant female chickens taking on male characteristics? This is definitely my top chicken right now. It is flapping at others, stealing bugs/herbs (treats) and otherwise being very precocious. Also all things that a young roo would do too, lol.

At this point it’s more of a fun guessing game! Thanks for your input!

That absolutely sounds 100% cockerel. Don't be shocked if he starts crowing next week. I have heard about the dominant thing but not so much at this age.

I am definitely interested to see how this one turns out. I had one of my mixed breed Delawares confuse me for so long her name is Leonidas. By her behavior and comb growth I could swear she was male but nope. Since she was mixed breed there was no standard of growth to compare her to.

I’ll let you know! TY again!
