I think I might want chicks this spring, but my beloved cock was made into a soup after an unfortunate leg injury. I saw that one of the men in the village has a bachelor flock.
would it be appropriate for me to ask for one of his very handsome cocks? Or should I just get fertilized eggs from someone?

That’s sound reasonable to me, I’d ask and if he says they’re not available I’d then look for eggs or chicks from someone.

I would recommend that you get fertilized eggs. Then you would not have to put up with a temperamental rooster and all the problems that go with having a rooster. Hens will go broody without a rooster and hatch the eggs that you give them.
