Hello,

This spring I mixed some breeds to see what egg colors they would give. I thought it might be fun for you guys to see, especially if you are concidering mixing these breeds yourself. My first flock is from 2021, and is a flock of 25 chickens and one rooster (BCM). This spring I wanted to hatch more chickens so that I could get a second flock. To get this new flock I both hatched eggs from my own chickens and I also bought hatching eggs. The second flock now consists of 21 hens and one rooster (Australorp).

First of all, my rooster is a Black Copper Marans.

1. The first mix is between my BCM rooster and Silverudds Blue hens.
The offspring (three chickens) give me these colors:

2. The second mix is between my BCM rooster and a Australorp hen.
The offspring (one chicken) give me this color:

3. The third mix is between my BCM rooster and an Englsih Araucana-mix (a hen that is already a mix, she lays dark green eggs).
The offspring (one chicken) give me this color:

4. The fourth mix is between my BCM rooster and an English Araucana hen.
The offspring (one chicken) give me this color:

In addition, this year I hatched some eggs from my own purebred Black Copper Marans.
This is what the offspring (three chickens) lays:

I also bought hatching eggs from a local breeder, this was the result from those chickens (three chickens):

As you can see, the chickens I got from the BCM hatching eggs I bought versus the "homemade" BCM chickens lays a very different colour! The bought ones has an orange color, while the ones I got from my own chickens are more red in color. Interesting to see!

I also hatched Cream Legbar and Vorwerk chickens together with these eggs :)

Hope some of you find this interesting.

Gorgeous eggs...congrats.

I have 2 separate flocks, a BCM flock and a mix flock with their BCM roo also. So very interested to ask if you have a pic of your BCM x Australorp hen if she's black you could share. I have a couple of these that are 8 wks old and interested to know what they may end up looking like.
The eggs your getting from your own BCMs are stunning. ♥️

Thank you!

Her mother is a grey Australorp hen.
Here you can see the BCM x Australorp girl:

I think she looks a lot like her mother. She has no copper colors, but she has a lot of feathers on her feet, like her father. She is not so big as her mother, more like the Marans in size, but I feel like she is a bit more "compact" than the Marans if that makes sence :)

Oh she's beautiful, thanks for sharing.
I'm still learning genetics and a couple things I was curious about was if the copper leakage and feathered feet would be dominant on that mix. I'm not seeing any feathered feet on my batch except for the one I'm thinking is a BCM x Barred Rock some hatcheries call Midnight Majesty's, but their still young yet at 8 wks, so I'll keep watching them.

Thanks again for sharing pics of your girl.

I'm guessing Marans have a gene for speckling. I like your home grown eggs the most!
