is it possible they are rolling in the herbs as a mite deterrent?
yes; some plants have long since been identified as pest deterrents, and form the basis of commercial products still; others are newly being identified. See e.g. Organic parasite control for poultry and rabbits in British Columbia, Canada (2011) https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3143080/
So-called sunbathing is about parasite control on feathers too.

thank you for the link. that’s really interesting and also not surprising. i am glad i have a lot of the things on the list! i must try to get some comfrey. i had it at my old house, and it’s good for compost tea too!
i have food grade DE for the garden, and reading a lot of posts here, i tried putting some in two of their (many) dust bath spots, but they never went back in those spots again🤷🏻‍♀️

Comfrey is a good herb, but be careful. I've read that too much can cause liver damage. If you have a yard with a lot of things to forage (sounds like you do!) I'd trust them to use moderation and self medicate as needed, but I wouldn't have it be the only green thing in a run, for example. If there was nothing else to do, they might pick at it too much and hurt themselves.

thank you! that's good to know. if i got some i would probably pot it so it didn't spread too much anyway. i wouldn't want a lot of it.
