We're building a brand new chicken coop from scratch (no pun intended!) and need some ideas for windows other than glass. We'll buy glass if necessary, but wanted some less expensive ideas. They'll also be covered on the outside with strong woven wire, too.

Cover with hardware cloth. Then make a shutter (hinged on top) on outside and prop to hold it open.

We got windows at Habitat for Humanity. In our hot humid summer weather windows that open are a necessity. We also built a screen door for summer that is switched to solid with window for winter. Of course any screened areas are covered with hardware cloth. Windows could be made with a piece o plexiglass. Or a piece of corrugated UV clear roofing can be made into a skylight if you just want light in your coop. We use it on the walls of our run in the winter.

No glass at my coop, except for the exterior grade door on the south wall, a Restore buy at $8.00 years ago.
Cover openings with hardware cloth, very well secured, and with big roof overhangs, it's good. if not, the hinged shutter from the top works very well.
Here in winter we cover tow of the windows with sheet vinyl, and the run walls also, leaving one to two feet open at the top for ventilation. Again, with roof overhangs, little or no snow will blow inside.
Closing everything up is very bad for the birds, they need good ventilation all year. It's making it overhead, not at roost level, for very cold weather.
