Soul? Yes. A spirit? No. I believe dogs and all other animals are a part of the earth and when they die their life force rejoins the earth. I think only people have eternal spirits. One of the reasons for my theory is that if they were eternal, they would need to be accountable for their actions and I can't see the logic in that.

I personally believe that dogs may have more perfect souls than humans do. Dogs love unconditionally. They are able to be happy, sad, heartbroken, all the range of emotions we feel without the social constraints that we as humans feel bound by.

Hi! It's freaky-weird that Darby that showed up here as a stray pup and ACTED just like my old dog that died 2 yrs before. Old dog was male S h i t z u and one new pup *showed up* was a female Border Collie.
If she isn't a reincarnation of my old dog, she is an old similar soul. It scares me sometimes.

What Gritsar said, I'd just add cats too.

Imps like all animals with tails have souls. Both come in handy.

I do not believe in reincarnation, I do believe in Kindred Spirits.

Now, my story:

In 1980 I adopted a German Shepard Mix puppy from the Animal Shelter, Brandy became my best friend, went with me every where, she listened to me, was there with me through good times and bad, she was my Buddy. We had a very long driveway (almost 3/4 mile) Brandy would hear me coming and run across the drive and follow my car to the house when I came home from work. One day she ran across the drive and for some reason ran back across, right in front of my car, she was killed instantly, I was mortified! My dad was home, came running out and literally had to pry her from my arms, I was unconsolable for months.
Years passed and in 1990 I moved to East TN, just below Knoxville. I had driven my husband to work and was coming home early one morning, there was a Black & tan dog running down the middle of the interstate, no collar. Something made me stop, I opened the door on the truck, she jumped in. I came to find out she was a Blue Heeler that had never colored. I ran an ad, no one claimed her. I was bathing her one day and I accidently touched the top of her head, she lifted her nose straight up, I gasped and got a lump in my throat (I had taught Brandy to do this same thing years before) I recovered and then touched her front leg, she lifted it up out of the water (Brandy also had been taught to do this) I was in tears, finished bathing her , dried her off and called my mom. Since we are religious I hestitated in talking to my mom about this for fear she would think I had flipped. My mom is the one who brought up Kindred Spirits.
LD, as I came to name her (for Lost Dog) became my best friend for 10 years, I ended up having to put her to sleep. The best thing she ever did for me was allow me to let go of the guilt I had carried all those years for hitting and killing Brandy.

Same thing kind of just happened with our Bouvier, Gordy. We found him the day our Cocker Spaniel died, in many ways he is like Simba. Coincidence or Kindred Spirit? I know what I believe.

Wow, and when I first saw this thread I thought I'd do this -

And not bother to say Yes. I mean, I really am not sure on the reincarnation bit, but I do believe that part of them goes somewhere. But, I certainly do believe that they have souls, as they have just as much emotion and comprehension as we do. We are just too busy with ourselves most of the time to notice it. And to me, that goes with all animals - not just dogs.

I do not believe in reincarnation and see no evidence of that. I do believe in creation. The bible which I believe is the word of God, says that He see even the sparrow that falls so I know He is concerned w/ the animals He created. Since the bible says Christ will return riding a white horse and that the prophet Elijah was seperated from Elisha by a chariot this is evidence there are animals in heaven. So I trust Him to take care of things I don't understand.
